What are hydrolats (or hydrosols)?
Essential oils are often produced by steam distillation, which involves passing steam through the plant material (leaves, flowers, stems) 🍃🌼.
This process releases both - essential oils and water-soluble plant compounds into the steam, which then condenses into liquid. The essential oils float on top and are separated out, leaving behind the „cloudy water“ hydrolat.
Hydrolats are also known as floral water, they contain the aromatic properties of plants and in some cases are more useful than essential oils.
Hydrolats and essential oils:
🌱Hydrolats are less concentrated than essential oils making them safe for use directly on the skin. Their pH value is 4-6.
🌱Hydrolats can be used for little kids, the elderly and animals. Can be taken internally.
🌱They provide light hydration and can be used as facial toners.
🌱Hydrolats carry the natural fragrance of the plant, offering a mild, pleasant scent.
Geranium Hydrolat - great skin tonic for all skin types. It attracts moisture and hold it into the skin. I spray it on my face every morning and evening.
Lavender Hydrolat - is cooling and healing. I’m using it after sun, when kids have any rashes, very nice also after shaving.
It’s very gentle for the nervous system, soothing and calming. Can be applied on sore eyes as well.
Calendula Hydrolat - I‘m using it on cuts or damages of skin for kids, when any skin issues or damages before applying the essential oil.
Chamomile Hydrolat - great soothing Hydrolat for kids, when any itchiness, skin disorders, applying on eye pads over closed eyes when any eye infections or tiredness.
Tea Tree Hydrolat - helps with wounds, cuts and insect bites. Promotes healing and prevents infection.
Hydrolats can be mixed together. There are not many hydrolats on the shelves but if you manage to find them, that’s a treasure!💫
Please make sure you use pure natural hydrolats and be aware there are some mixtures on the market.
The shelf life of Hydrolat is around 1 year if kept in the fridge. Needs to be used within 6 months.
