تقدم حاسم في علاج العيوب الوراثية باستخدام العلاج الجيني، فقد تم تحرير صبي يبلغ من العمر ١١ عامًا في مستشفى الأطفال في فيلادلفيا من الصمم الخلقي. أفادت مجموعة بحث صينية عن نجاح علاجي مماثل لدى خمسة أطفال. وقد ساهم طبيب من مستشفى جامعة توبنغن بشكل كبير في تحقيق هذا النجاح.

واحد من كل ٥٠٠ طفل في ألمانيا يولد أصم. وتقول إلين رايزنجر، الأستاذة في مستشفى جامعة توبنغن، إن أكثر من ٦٠% منهم يكون لديهم خلل وراثي. أعلنت مجموعة بحثية أميركية وصينية عن نجاح العلاج الجيني لنوع فرعي خاص من الصمم الوراثي يسمى DFNB9.

الصمم الناتج عن خلل وراثي يمنع الناقلات العصبية:
في هذا النوع من الصمم الخلقي، تكون الأذن سليمة تمامًا من الصيوان إلى الأذن الداخلية. لكن المادة المرسال أوتوفيرلين، التي تنقل الإشارات إلى الخلايا العصبية في الدماغ المسؤولة عن السمع، لا تعمل، كما تقول إلين رايزنجر، التي تركز أبحاثها على العلاج الجيني للصمم.
