"In our daily lives, we are bombarded by images about just any occasion; along with the “selfie” phenomenon and our generalized cross-cultural and across ages social media addiction, during this pandemic we have came to a point where we are exposed to others’ and our own image even when we are at work. Exposed to a constant documentation of our imperfections, we end up scrutinizing our image and our bodies not only on social media but also on VOIP platforms (like Zoom, Teams, Skype etc.). Physical appearance enters the professional ring alongside education, performance or experience, stronger than ever. On top of that sociological mutation of the workplace brought about by the COVID pandemic, we are witnessing a world-wide vulgarization of cosmetic surgery; the cult of beauty and youth now takes the form of surgeons, beauticians and “influencers” around the globe showcasing procedures on social media with sensational “Before/After” face, lips, nose, weight loss etc. transformation photos. More diversified, targeted, affordable and more accessible than ever, cosmetic procedures seem available at the touch of a button.
The rise in cosmetic procedures doctors say has followed the COVID pandemic can also be explained by some practical reasons, like the convenience of downtime that can be spent working in the privacy and comfort of one’s home. At the same time, being able to cover facial bruising and scars or bandages under a facial mask, allows patients to undergo a procedure knowing that they can conceal it until they are fully recovered."
