To ensure children with developmental delays are identified in a timely manner, systematic surveillance should be put in place. This means, all children should be screened at critical periods and referred as needed. Screening should also be performed for children with identified risk factors, when there is parental or clinician concern. The American Academy of pediatrics recommends screening at 9, 18 and 24 (or 30) months, and other visits as appropriate.
