When was the last time your partner made a small bid for your attention and you didn’t catch it?

“Want to grab coffee?” “Look at this article.” “Should we watch something tonight?”

These aren’t just casual questions. They’re invitations to connect. And when we miss them or respond with a distracted “uh-huh” we’re turning away instead of turning toward.

In couples therapy, we see this pattern constantly: partners living parallel lives, not because they don’t care, but because they stopped recognizing each other’s bids.

The research is clear: couples who consistently respond to bids for connection report 67% higher relationship satisfaction. But in Dubai’s fast-paced environment, where career demands and expat life create additional stress, these moments often get lost.

The good news? This pattern is reversible. With the right therapeutic support, couples learn to:
→ Recognize subtle bids for attention
→ Respond with presence, not distraction
→ Rebuild daily rituals of connection

Unlike therapeutic art making, art therapy goes beyond relaxation. It helps translate what’s stored in the body and mind into something visible, tangible, and understood. The process allows emotions to move from being felt to being seen, a critical step toward insight and regulation.
As art therapists, we do not only encourage clients to make art, rather, to make meaning out of experiences, through art.

ATIC is the first clinic specializing in Art Psychotherapy in the UAE, our licensed art psychotherapists bring evidence-based creative and psychological approaches to every session. If you’re curious to explore how art therapy can support you, we’re here to connect.

In the early months of motherhood, it’s easy to feel that our worth depends on how much we do, how much of a ‘good mother’ we are, the feeds, the cleaning, the constant giving. But rest and recovery count just as much and arguably is vital.

Across the UK, around 1 in 10 women experience postnatal depression, and anxiety affects nearly 13% of new mothers. Many go through this without enough support feeling alone, unseen, or expected to manage everything on their own. This can feel even more isolating when living in another country away from extended family and support.

But you don’t have to do this alone. Motherhood was never meant to be a solo journey, it takes a village.

At ATIC, we’re part of that village. Our team provides safe, compassionate spaces for mothers to rest, reconnect, and receive support for their emotional wellbeing which in turn helps mum abd helps baby.

You’re not falling behind. You’re healing and you are doing the best you can, we’re here with you.

Does online therapy really work?

For many, getting to therapy isn’t easy.
Anxiety, mobility challenges, stigma, or a busy schedule can make leaving the house feel overwhelming.

Online therapy changes that.
UK research shows it’s just as effective as in-person sessions for anxiety, depression, and stress.

At ATIC, Dr. Sara Powell and Dr. Mariam El Halawani also conducted and published research during the pandemic on the effectiveness of online therapy in the Gulf region. Their findings demonstrated strong results even for trauma and digital art therapy a model that continues at ATIC today.

Online therapy offers comfort, privacy, and flexibility.

You don’t have to leave home to start feeling better.
Sometimes the screen isn’t a barrier, it’s a bridge.

Same level of care, expertise, and support… just in ATIC’s virtual space.

Creating a Safe Space for Online Therapy

Some considerations for online therapy set-up (from a therapist’s perspective):
• Setting up in a quiet, confidential space
• Preparing a range of art materials to support different emotional experiences (for art therapy sessions)
• Planning a mindful opening and closing for each session

Online therapy can be just as meaningful when approached with care and structure.
Our therapists at ATIC are here to connect whenever you feel ready.

Many couples think that arguments = failure. But in reality, conflict isn’t the problem, disconnection is.
When partners feel unheard, unseen, or unsafe, even small issues can spiral.

What matters most isn’t whether you argue.
It’s how you repair and reconnect afterwards.

Here are a few ways to turn tension into understanding:

✨ Shift from blame to curiosity
Try: “Help me understand what you’re feeling right now.”

✨ Soften your startup
Begin gently, not defensively. Use “I feel… about… and I need…” statements.

✨ Repair early and often
Even a simple “I see your point” or “Let’s take a pause” can change everything.

When you use arguments as invitations to reconnect, you create space for deeper closeness, safety, and understanding.
Try it, and notice the difference. 🤍

How Do We (Actually) View Therapy?

Across our region, many adults were taught to stay composed, stay grateful, handle things quietly, and solve things privately. Emotional struggle often feels like something to be hidden, not explored.

This is an invitation to reframe, to begin seeing therapy as a form of responsibility.
Seeking therapy is part of how we show up for ourselves and for the people around us. It’s choosing to understand how our past experiences, emotions, and stress responses shape the way we communicate, parent, lead, and connect.

When we take the time to process and heal, we break patterns that are not serving us or those around us.

At ATIC, we see therapy as a meaningful act of accountability, an ongoing commitment to growth, awareness, and healthier relationships.

✨ Take the first step toward understanding and healing.

In the quest for personal growth and psychological well-being, self-reflection serves as a guiding light toward self-discovery and authenticity.
Rooted in the teachings of Carl Jung and core psychological principles, this practice helps us unlock the depths of our psyche and build resilience through life’s challenges.

Here are three actionable insights to deepen your self-reflection:
1️⃣ Cultivate Mindful Awareness: Create quiet moments for journaling or meditation. Presence without judgment opens the door to understanding.
2️⃣ Embrace the Shadow: Confront the hidden parts of yourself with compassion; they are part of your wholeness.
3️⃣ Engage in Dialogue: Speak with trusted confidants or therapists. Honest communication brings clarity and growth.

The journey of self-reflection is not about perfection , it’s about awareness, courage, and authenticity.

If you’re ready to explore your inner world and deepen your self-awareness, our therapists at ATIC are here to guide you.

ATIC’s Story

ATIC Psychological and Counselling Center originated out of Singapore, opening its doors in 2010. Our founders, Sara Powell and Theresa Ng, opened the center in order to educate, promote and provide Psychotherapy – with a specialization in Expressive Therapies – services to the community. Their shared passion for the Arts and therapeutic practices brought ATIC Psychological and Counselling Center to life.

We are a social impact community driven company built on the intention of expanding the social care sector, diversifying the services (Art and Expressive Therapies) currently available in the UAE. The drive to do so can be linked to Founder Sara Powell’s heavy connections and love for the region, having grown up in Dubai and having family – through marriage – from the UAE and Gulf.
