Mulligan Concept

Mulligan Concept International second opinion physiotherapist and manual therapy and sports educator. Based in Dubai Mulligan.

The Mulligan Concept was founded by a master physiotherapist from New Zealand

Brian R. The concept is a completely new approach in assessment and treatment movement disorders. When movement is restricted at any joint in the body it is possibly caused by joint restriction in certain directions. When indicated, a painfree joint mobilization will commonly restore movement at that specific joint and results in an immediate decrease of pain or other symptoms. The assessment and treatment is unique, because results will be felt and observed immediately. While the method may not be suitable for all the types of movement or pain problems, it seems to help the most common problems encountered at the clinic. In other words, the method is a pain free joint mobilisation that will commonly restore movement deficit and decrease pain within few minutes.

Key points to remember when considering Mulligans lumbar SNAG for assessment and treatment, for pain or/and movement limitations ( Arabic ). From lower Quadrant course in Amman, Jordan 🇯🇴

Mulligans supination technique is unbeatable, commonly restoring the movement instantly. Here performed on Josef during a course in Jeddah, KSA. Mulligan s wrist techniques are in fact the only scientifically proven techniques for those who suffered a radial fracture and treated conservatively. Check Reid et al 2018.

Manipulations can be useful, however often not necessary and sometimes dangerous. The trend of Physio’s manipulating the cervical spine after a weekend courses is very irresponsible. Most manipulations are safe, most are also useless and sometimes very dangerous. Few manipulations educators are honest, professionals. Some just cashing in on the nativity of Physio’s and others. Do no harm is the first statement that should be kept in mind. We can’t help everyone but we shouldn’t hurt anyone. So please no neck dingers, that is very dangerous. Some manipulations are useful. Most manipulations are safe, many are useless or directly too risky. No neck dingers, no shoulder manipulations use common sense.

Dear Physio’s keep therapy safe. If you have learned to manipulate use your knowledge with care. Weekend courses aren’t gonna educate you in making wise decisions, but may give you an idea. In my opinion, most manipulations are safe, some are always dangerous and most manipulations are generally unnecessary. Meck dingers is very dangerous, never do it.

Treatment of dizziness of neck origin is made fairly simple by Brian Mulligan (NZ). A ventral glide to C2 SP, then move into extension. Repeat few times and do it whenever you get dizziness. This has been documented scientifically by Susan Reid et al. My advise, treat the cx-tx junction before treating the upper spine, that will result in superior long lasting effect.

Young Physio treated during the course in 🇯🇴 Jordan.
Suffered from headache, dizziness daily for the past four years, also episodes of nausia 2-3 times per week. Treatment, Bridge plus C1/2 rotation SNAG, in this case done in supine on R C1.
Few minutes of treatment changed her ROM, Symptoms.

When Mulligans mobilizations with movement is indicated. No therapy can even get close to the results of simple mobilization techniques. Opposite than many people think, the Mulligan approach is most likely to affect the central nervous system than the tissue, like muscles, joints and nerves etc.
Yes, the therapist applies a mechanical force that we call a joint glide in a specific direction. That is unlikely to heal the tissue or strengthen the muscles etc. however, the action relays information to the brain centers concerned with movement, fear, education etc
The brain can then recreate a synergy of actions to keep the pain free movement.
This is an example of a woman who suffered from ankle pain, knee pain and type of shooting nerve pain from the back.

The treatment helped her regain ankle and back movement in a way that she was able to walk the stairs again within minutes.
The brain takes care of the rest and whatever tissue that was bothering her movement will recover quickly once movement is restored. That in itself puts down fear and lack of motivation to move

Mulligan is the future of Manual therapy because it involves the person on multiple levels

Our Story

The Mulligan Concept was founded by a master physiotherapist from New Zealand Brian R. Mulligan. The concept is a completely new approach in assessment and treatment movement disorders. When movement is restricted at any joint in the body it is possibly caused by joint restriction in certain directions. Using a painfree joint mobilization will commonly restore movement at that specific joint and result in immediate decrease of pain or other symptoms. The mechanisms involved in this process is speculative at this stage however one can assume that Mobilisations with Movement (MWM)/ Mulligan, somehow affects the nervous system in a way that allows changes in movement and pain perception to take place. The assessment and treatment is unique, because results will be felt and observed immediately when indicated for a specific person and problem.

While the method may not be suitable for all the types of movement or pain problems, it seems to be a superb method for the most common problems encountered at the clinic.

Mulligan s method is mainly usefull for movement restrictions be it common movement problems or sports related restriction or performance deficits.

In other words, the method is a pain free joint mobilisation that will commonly restore movement deficit and decrease pain within few minutes. The treatment may need to be repeated and supported with home exercise/self mobilisation and sometimes sportstape..
