Have we mistaken yoga for just movements?
In today’s world, yoga is often reduced to postures or fitness routines. Yoga Beyond the Mat invites participants to explore yoga in its full depth — as a philosophy, a cultural practice, and a path for self-understanding.
This lecture-style workshop focuses on the history, philosophy, and evolution of yoga, offering a deep dive into its essence, purpose, and how it has been interpreted across centuries.
What participants will gain:
• A historical overview of yoga: tracing its journey from the Vedas and Upanishads, through classical texts like Patañjali’s Yoga Sutras, to modern interpretations and global practice.
• Understanding of the different paths of yoga — including Karma Yoga (action), Bhakti Yoga (devotion), Jnana Yoga (knowledge), Raja Yoga (meditation), and Hatha Yoga (physical disciplines) — and how these paths interrelate in Indic thought.
• Insights into Indic philosophy structures: exploring concepts from Sāṅkhya, Vedanta, Ta**ra, and other frameworks that shaped the understanding of mind, body, and consciousness in yoga.
• Guidance on how these philosophical and historical insights can enhance any personal or practical yoga practice, helping participants engage with yoga with awareness and depth.
• Opportunities for reflection, discussion, and community interaction, making the experience interactive despite being lecture-based.
Who should attend?
This workshop is for anyone who:
• Feels that yoga is “something more” than just postures.
• Wants to understand yoga’s history, philosophy, and cultural context.
• Is a practitioner, teacher, or curious learner seeking meaning, context, and depth in their yoga journey.
Join us to rediscover the essence of yoga, explore its philosophical and cultural roots, and learn how these timeless principles can inform and enrich your practice beyond the mat.
