Your body suddenly jerking awake just as you’re about to fall asleep can feel strange. Sometimes even alarming.

This is often called a hypnic jerk. It can happen when your nervous system has been on high alert and is still releasing tension as you drift into sleep.

In that moment, the most helpful thing you can do is calm the body by following these steps:

• Take a slow deep breath through your nose
• Exhale slowly through your mouth
• Relax your jaw, shoulders, and belly
• Place one hand on your heart and the other on your stomach, feeling your breath gently rise and fall
• Remind yourself: my body is safe ✨

Let the sensation pass without resisting it. The calmer you respond, the easier it is for your nervous system to settle and return to rest.

Your body isn’t working against you. It’s simply releasing built-up tension.
