In 2022, an estimated 4380 women in Afghanistan have died due to childbirth or pregnancy complications. This is an alarming statistic and a majority of these deaths are preventable. We must be committed to improving maternal health care and ensuring that women have access to quality healthcare.

Around 8 out of every 10 Afghan people drink unsafe water, which can lead to a variety of health issues, including diarrhea, cholera and other waterborne diseases. Inadequate access to clean water is a major problem in Afghanistan and is a consequence of decades of conflict, poverty and lack of infrastructure. Poor sanitation, lack of proper hygiene and inadequate water supplies all contribute to the problem. Much more needs to be done in order to ensure that everyone in the country has access to safe, clean drinking water.

The fact that women in Afghanistan were not getting medical tests does not mean they do not value visits to healthcare professionals. Seventy-one percent of Afghan women said they believe in the value of going to a healthcare professional, and 61% said they had been to a healthcare professional in the past 12 months.
However, access to these professionals will likely remain a challenge: In 2020, roughly one in three Afghans had no access to a functional health center within two hours of their home, according to the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

Nearly a tenth of Afghan adolescent females (aged 15–19) give birth every year as a consequence of early marriage and lack of access to reproductive health information and services.
Girls and adolescents are far likelier to die of causes related to pregnancy than their older sisters. The pregnancy-related mortality ratio of women aged 15 to 19 in Afghanistan is estimated at 531 deaths per 100,000 live births compared to 257 deaths per 100,000 live births for young women between the ages of 20 and 24 years.

In Afghanistan, it is estimated that more than half the population experience depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress, but fewer than 10 percent receive adequate psychosocial support they need.

By stepping up our support and removing the stigma surrounding mental health, we can help lift the burden of trauma off the shoulders of those who have already suffered enough.

Universal access to emergency primary health care does not exist in Afghanistan. At least 1000 health facilities located across the country are not currently supported by any institution. In these underserved areas, 70% of the population must travel more than 10 kilometres, often on foot, to reach the nearest health centre.

Afghanistan is currently facing multiple outbreaks, including COVID-19, Measles, Acute Watery Diarrhea (AWD), Leishmaniasis, and Scabies, which added to an increased burden on the already fragile health system.

In Afghanistan, children are dying due to measles outbreaks. According to UN estimates, there will be 1.1 million severely malnourished children in Afghanistan in 2022 who are particularly at risk of dying from the disease. However, two doses of the inexpensive, highly effective measles vaccine prevents infection, illness, and death. The major challenge to measles prevention in Afghanistan has been a failure to reach all children.

Between January and August 2022, 65,470 suspected measles cases and 367 measles deaths were reported in Afghanistan; this likely represents an underestimate, as causes of illness and mortality are not systematically recorded by the public health system.
