What Is a Toothache?
د غاښ د درد اړوند لنډه ليکنه

A toothache or tooth pain is most often caused when the nerve to a tooth is irritated, but there are numerous other reasons for a person to experience tooth pain. Risk factors for toothache include dental infection, gum disease, plaque, dental decay, injury, cracked teeth, poorly placed fillings or crowns, failing or leaking fillings or crowns, loss of a tooth (including tooth extractions), temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, and obstructive sleep apnea. There are instances, however, where pain originating from outside the mouth radiates to the mouth, thus giving the impression that the pain is of tooth origin. This often happens when there is a problem with the jaw joint (temporomandibular joint or TMJ), ears, nerves, sinuses, or muscles. Occasionally, heart problems can give a sensation of tooth pain. Pregnancy can also be a risk for tooth problems that lead to pain. Due to fluctuating hormone levels during pregnancy, pregnancy gingivitis and tooth decay can occur.

What Causes a Toothache?
Toothaches occur from inflammation of the central portion of the tooth called pulp. The pulp contains nerve endings that are very sensitive to pain. Inflammation to the pulp, or pulpitis, can be caused by anything that has contact with the tooth. Common causes of tooth pain are the following:

Dental cavities/tooth decay
Temperature sensitivity -- hot or cold liquids or foods
Hot or cold air
Teeth grinding or clenching
Orthodontic movement -- braces
Abscessed tooth
Impacted wisdom tooth
Pregnancy
After a crown, a tooth will sometimes become sensitive after a crown is prepared or cemented.
Gingivitis
Periodontal disease
Gum recession -- exposure of the tooth root that was covered by gum or bone
Tooth fracture
Acid erosion
Damaged or broken fillings or crowns
Cold sore or canker sore
Symptoms

Pain with chewing
Sensitivity to hot or cold air and liquids
Bleeding or discharge from around a tooth or gums
Swelling around a tooth or swelling of the jaw or cheek
Injury or trauma to the area.
Home Remedies for Toothaches
For toothaches
People may use over-the-counter pain medications such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) Aleve or ibuprofen (Advil). Individuals with toothaches should take these medications as directed for temporary relief prior to professional evaluation.
Avoid very cold or hot foods because these may make the pain worse.
A home remedy for pain relief is to bite on a cotton ball soaked in oil of cloves. Clove oil is available at most drugstores.
Garlic contains a chemical called allicin, which acts as a natural antibiotic and can fight a tooth infection. By simply eating more garlic through supplementation or as an ingredient in everyday foods, one can decrease their vulnerability to infection. To help alleviate pain, garlic can be crushed and mixed into a paste with a little bit of salt and applied to the area that is infected. This won't cure the infection but may help with tooth pain and prevent the infection from growing or spreading.
Applying medicated relief gel like Orajel to the affected area can provide pain relief in some instances.
For jaw pain
Aspirin or ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) may be helpful for problems in the jaw joint (TMJ) in adults.
Acetaminophen (Tylenol), not aspirin, should be used for children and teenagers.
If pain occurs every time the patient opens his/her mouth widely, the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) may be the source of the pain. Yawning or taking a large bite of food may intensify the pain. To manage this type of pain in the short term, one should avoid hard or chewy foods, apply moist heat to the jaw, and avoid opening wide as much as possible. An appointment with

Why Did My Teeth Change Color?
Over time, your teeth can go from white to not-so-bright for a number of reasons:

Food and Drink
Coffee, tea and red wine are some major staining culprits. What do they have in common? Intense color pigments called chromogens that attach to the white, outer part of your tooth (enamel).

To***co Use
Two chemicals found in to***co create stubborn stains: Tar and ni****ne. Tar is naturally dark. Ni****ne is colorless until it’s mixed with oxygen. Then, it turns into a yellowish, surface-staining substance.

Age
Below the hard, white outer shell of your teeth (enamel) is a softer area called dentin. Over time, the outer enamel layer gets thinner with brushing and more of the yellowish dentin shows through.

Trauma
If you’ve been hit in the mouth, your tooth may change color because it reacts to an injury by laying down more dentin, which is a darker layer under the enamel.

Medications
Tooth darkening can be a side effect of certain antihistamines, antipsychotics and high blood pressure medications. Young children who are exposed to antibiotics like tetracycline and doxycycline when their teeth are forming (either in the womb or as a baby) may have discoloration of their adult teeth later in life. Chemotherapy and head and neck radiation can also darken teeth.

How Does Teeth Whitening Work?
Teeth whitening is a simple process. Whitening products contain one of two tooth bleaches (hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide). These bleaches break stains into smaller pieces, which makes the color less concentrated and your teeth brighter.

Does Whitening Work on All Teeth?
No, which is why it’s important to talk to your dentist before deciding to whiten your teeth, as whiteners may not correct all types of discoloration. For example, yellow teeth will probably bleach well, brown teeth may not respond as well and teeth with gray tones may not bleach at all. Whitening will not work on caps, veneers, crowns or fillings. It also won’t be effective if your tooth discoloration is caused by medications or a tooth injury.

What Are My Whitening Options?
Talk to your dentist before starting. If you are a candidate, there are four ways to put the shine back in your smile:

Stain Removal Toothpastes
All toothpastes help remove surface stain through the action of mild abrasives that scrub the teeth. Look for whitening toothpastes that have earned the ADA Seal of Acceptance for stain removal (it will tell you on the package). These toothpastes have additional polishing agents that are safe for your teeth and provide stain removal effectiveness. Unlike bleaches, these types of ADA-Accepted products do not change the color of teeth because they can only remove stains on the surface.

In-Office Bleaching
This procedure is called chairside bleaching and usually requires only one office visit. The dentist will apply either a protective gel to your gums or a rubber shield to protect your gums. Bleach is then applied to the teeth.

At-Home Bleaching from Your Dentist
Your dentist can provide you with a custom-made tray for at-home whitening. In this case, the dentist will give you instructions on how to place the bleaching solution in the tray and for what length of time. This may be a preferred option if you feel more comfortable whitening in your own home at a slower pace, but still with the guidance of a dentist. Out-of-office bleaching can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks.

Over-the-Counter Bleaching Products
You may see different options online or in your local grocery store, such as toothpastes or strips that whiten by bleaching your teeth. The concentration of the bleaching agent in these products is lower than what your dentist would use in the office. If you are thinking about using an over-the-counter bleaching kit, discuss options with your dentist and look for one with the ADA Seal of Acceptance. That means it has been tested to be safe and effective for teeth whitening. Get a list of all ADA-Accepted at-home bleaching products.

Are There Any Side Effects from Teeth Whitening?
Some people who use teeth whiteners may experience tooth sensitivity. That happens when the peroxide in the whitener gets through the enamel to the soft layer of dentin and irritates the nerve of your tooth. In most cases the sensitivity is temporary. You can delay treatment, then try again.

Overuse of whiteners can also damage the tooth enamel or gums, so be sure to follow directions and talk to your dentist.

EFFECTIVE LESSON ABOUT MOUTH SORES
There are many potential causes of mouth sores. When these sores appear, they are often painful and can make everyday activities, such as brushing the teeth or eating hot food, more difficult.
In most cases, mild irritation causes a sore to appear. Avoiding the irritant can help a person prevent mouth sores in the future.

In other cases, sores form due to underlying health conditions. As some mouth sores can be contagious and may require treatment, anyone who is concerned about chronic or long-lasting sores should speak to a doctor.

In this article, learn about the possible causes of mouth sores as well as the treatment options.

Causes
Most mouth sores occur as a result of irritation. Many things can irritate the mouth and lead to sores, including:

poorly fitting dentures
a sharp or broken tooth
braces or other devices, such as retainers
burning the mouth on hot food or beverages
to***co products
In other cases, mouth sores may develop due to:

certain medications, including beta-blockers
highly acidic foods
quitting to***co
hormonal changes during pregnancy
stress
vitamin and folate deficiencies
Medical conditions and diseases that cause mouth sores include:

Candidiasis, or oral thrush, which is a fungal infection that causes white and red patches to appear in the mouth.
Herpes simplex, which causes cold sores on the mouth and can also produce ge***al sores.
Lichen planus, a chronic condition that causes an itchy, inflammatory rash in the mouth or on the skin.
Chronic canker sores, which have a red, flat edge and white or greyish patches surrounding them.
Gingivostomatitis, a common infection that is particularly prevalent in children. The sores are similar to canker sores, but they occur alongside symptoms of a cold or the flu.
Hand, foot, and mouth disease, which causes small, painful red patches to appear on these parts of the body. It is most common in children.
Leukoplakia, which causes white-grey patches to appear nearly anywhere in the mouth.
Autoimmune diseases, which may cause mouth sores to form.
Erythroplakia, a red patch that appears on the floor of the mouth and can be cancerous or precancerous.
Oral cancer, which can cause sores and lesions in the mouth.
Diagnosis
In most cases, a person can determine the cause of their mouth sore themselves. For example, a person who has had a canker sore before will recognize another one if it appears.

A person who bites their cheek will know that the sore came from this incident. People with diagnosed conditions, such as herpes of the mouth, may recognize their symptoms and have a plan of action to address the flare.

If a person has recurrent or unexplained mouth sores, a doctor may be able to identify the cause of the sores by carrying out a visual check. They may also perform some tests, such as swabs and blood tests.

If a doctor suspects that a sore is the result of serious illness, they are likely to perform a biopsy of the area to test for the presence of cancer or other health issues.

Treatment
In many cases, mouth sores will heal without treatment. Sores from minor injuries will typically clear within 1–2 weeks.

While their sores are healing, people can try:

gargling with salt water
excluding hot or spicy foods from their diet
abstaining from using to***co products
avoiding alcohol
avoiding eating citrus fruits or salty foods, as they may cause sores to sting
using mouthwash
taking oral pain relievers
applying baking soda and water to the sore
If home remedies are not enough or the sore does not heal on its own, a person may wish to talk with their doctor about further treatment options.

A doctor can prescribe stronger anti-inflammatory or pain-relieving medications and ointments. If an underlying condition is causing the mouth sores, a doctor will develop a treatment plan for this too.

Prevention
Some steps that a person can take to help prevent mouth sores include:

avoiding hot foods and beverages
chewing carefully and slowly
practicing good dental hygiene
decreasing stress
avoiding smoking and other to***co use
limiting or avoiding alcohol consumption
drinking plenty of water
speaking to a dentist if a dental device is causing irritation
using barrier protection during s*x
using lip balms with SPF to avoid sun damage
When to see a doctor
A person should speak to a healthcare professional if they experience:

sores that get worse or do not get better over time
signs of an infection
white patches on the sores
sores that develop after starting medication or cancer treatment.
