Syncope diagnosis is challenging due to its wide range of causes, from life-threatening cardiac syncope (with double the mortality risk) to benign forms like reflex syncope or orthostatic hypotension. Since 35% of the population experiences at least one syncopal episode in their lifetime and half of these patients are hospitalized but discharged without a diagnosis, a structured clinical evaluation is essential.
The newly developed DIAGNOSTIC SYNCOPE PATHWAYS aim to visually represent ESC guidelines, helping clinicians track diagnostic progress, make faster decisions, and identify clear neurological “red flags” to ensure neurology is only consulted when truly necessary.
✅ Results:
✔️ Shorter diagnostic times through clear process presentation
✔️ Targeted referrals only when there is concrete evidence of cardiac or neurological causes
✔️ Improved patient safety and quality of life
🧐 Outlook: Future developments will integrate geriatrics and nursing to better address unexplained falls in older patients, as studies suggest up to one-third may be syncope-related. Scientific validation of the benefits of these pathways is already being planned.
