Understanding Pilates means understanding a system to organise load in the body.

Pilates has changed lives for over 100 years. Not because we burn calories with it. Or get an intense workout. Or build muscle with it.

But because we work WITH the body rather than against it. We teach it to transmit force without unnecessary tension. And once it learns that? It applies it! Everywhere. All the time.

Teachers who understand this and know how to apply it in their classes, create lasting positive change for their students. They see constant progress, increased movement competence, increased strength and resilience and wellbeing.

In our opinion? That is worth 1000000 x more than an intense workout or a fancy choreography.

Which is why our training programme does not teach Pilates as a workout. There are no choreographies or class plans that will “kill” or “burn” or “destroy” their students.

We teach a system. Deep understanding and appreciation of different bodies and how they move. Kindness and inclusion. Movement principles based on science. And to understand the purpose behind movement, cues, sequences, order, and options.

And the underlying principles in all of it? Genuine care and intense curiosity.

We are so proud of the people who choose this programme. Because in Austria? Where Pilates is a “freies Gewerbe” and requires no training or experience? They didn’t have to.

This move has been emotional.

For someone who prefers to remain out of the spotlight, moving Soma Co. into this kind of luxury and beauty was a process. After all, our motto was and always will be:
Quality over aesthetic.

I’m not going to lie. I was worried. How can we maintain our warm, unintimidating and personal vibe in a space this big and luxurious? And then I realised:

It was never the studio.
It was the people. The values. The approach. The communication style. The teaching style…

It was the teachers. The colours. The non-negotiables. The focus on kindness and inclusivity, rather than popularity and trends. It was the casual, never-take-ourselves-too-seriously-, and always-pause-when-you-need-rest vibe.

It was the integrity of what we teach and how we teach it, the training and education we have.

It was the all the things you can’t see but always feel.

And none of that has changed.

We just have more space and comfort to share it now.

About 250m down the road from where we are, I found the perfect studio.

Nestled in the quiet courtyard of a Taborstraße apartment building, stands a beautifully renovated „Innenhofhaus“, about 220m2 big.

The moment I entered I knew: this is where soma co. belongs.

3 years ago, when I signed the lease to the original studio, the plan was to be small. Tiny. Off the radar. Just a couple of sqm of unassuming space, to do what I love so much: teach movement in an intimate and personal space, to a select few people looking for quality, kindness, and care.

I never imagined that within days of announcing the opening, the studio will be filled beyond the brim, with waitlists full of people that all, somehow, found us and thought “yep, this is where I belong”.

The next 2 years were filled with apologies.

About the lack of space, the long waitlists, the cramped change rooms, the DIY flaws, the cold air and street dirt in winter, the heat in summer and the inability to spend a moment with all of you before or after class, cause, like, where?!

I am indescribably proud of what soma co. has become. The inclusion, quality, integrity and kindness of it all… is unparalleled.

And now we have a space where we can celebrate and enjoy that.

About 60% of the people doing our programme have previously completed a crash-course “weekend-workshop” kinda course and realised: this won’t do.

Understanding bodies, movement, people, the foundations of the pilates method, the science of load and control… that CAN’T be learned in days!

And surely we all agree… you HAVE to understand, before you go out and teach?

This is our vibe.

We’re not going to kill you in class.
We’re not going to push you until you fall off the machine.
We’re not going to waste what precious time we have with you to try and get you to burn a few extra calories.
We have no mirrors for selfies.

Instead, you will start to feel lasting change. In the way you move. In the way your little pains and niggles start to disappear. In the way you feel in control of your body and start to notice that you can do things you could never do before. That is reformer pilates.

That is worth so much more than how things look and what your numbers say.

At least that’s what we believe!

First impressions matter.

All studios I’ve built have had one thing in common. The first impressions is: comforting.

Happy colours, encouraging words, friendly faces, un-intimidating and imperfect spaces.

Cause for many of us, it’s kinda scary to try something new. Leave our comfort zone. Put ourselves out there.

But that’s where growth happens - outside our comfort zone. And I know how validating it is, when we make ourselves vulnerable and are met with kindness and encouragement and the feeling that however we chose to, (or managed to) show up, was perfect.

That’s how we do things here, at .studio. That’s how we do all the things.

“I don’t think I would have had the courage to come here if everything had been fancy and perfect”

was all I needed to hear when I finally opened this studio that, after builder scams, construction fails, court cases, delays, burglaries and months of DIY projects, was so far from perfect.

No need to be perfect here. We‘re not either 🤷‍♀️❤️
