Not all cancers are treated the same — and this plays a key role in guiding treatment decisions.

This distinction matters. Primary and secondary cancers behave differently, respond differently to treatment, and require carefully planned, personalised approaches. Factors such as how cancer spreads, how fast it grows, and how surrounding tissues are affected all influence treatment decisions — including whether radiotherapy is used alone or alongside other therapies.

Understanding the difference between primary and secondary cancer helps ensure that treatment is targeted, effective, and tailored to each patient’s individual situation. It’s a key part of delivering precise, patient-centred cancer care.

📈 According to the European Commission, cancer cases in Europe are rising, with projections showing an 18% increase in cancer deaths by 2040 due to demographic shifts.

💡 Radiotherapy advancements are part of the solution:

• Radiotherapy precision and innovation continue to improve outcomes, especially for difficult-to-treat tumours.
• Modern techniques help focus treatment where it matters most, reducing harm to healthy tissue and increasing effectiveness.
• Even as cases rise, evolved radiotherapy offers real potential to reduce mortality and improve quality of life.

At Amethyst Radiotherapy, we bring these innovations to patients with precise, personalised, world-class cancer care — aiming not just to keep up with Europe’s rising cancer burden, but to make a measurable difference in outcomes.

🔬 Osteoarthritis: How Low-Dose Radiotherapy Can Be Used As a Treatment Option

According to the Global Burden of Disease Study, 595 million people worldwide are living with osteoarthritis — making it the most common form of arthritis.

However, low-dose radiotherapy has emerged as a non-invasive treatment option, which is characterized by:

🔷 Low-dose external radiation targeted at the affected joint
🔷 Induction of controlled cell death in inflammatory cells
🔷 Suppression of pro-inflammatory cytokines while increasing anti-inflammatory ones

This approach can reduce pain and improve mobility, even in cases where medication or physiotherapy has not provided sufficient relief, and is generally well tolerated due to the low radiation dose—resulting in minimal side effects and meaningful improvements in quality of life for many patients.
