Interventional radiologists: the clinicians of radiology 🏥

Interventional radiologists are not only in the angio suite but also on the wards. We round on our inpatients, because IR is truly clinical. 💉

🩺 Our role goes far beyond procedures:
– We have our own beds and are responsible for our in-patients.
– We provide consultations before, during, and after procedures, ensuring continuity of care.
– We participate in diagnosis, treatment planning, and multidisciplinary discussions, just like any other clinician.
– And of course, we deliver state-of-the-art minimally invasive treatments that improve outcomes and shorten recovery times.

Interventional radiologists are not just skilled technicians; they are highly trained clinicians who follow their patients throughout the journey, combining imaging expertise, procedural skill and patient-centred care.
Let’s continue to recognize and elevate the role of IR in healthcare. ⚕️

This year, I had a pleasure of attending the CIRSE Annual Congress together with my colleague, Arianna Di Marco, and it was truly an amazing experience. We took part in all the events dedicated to students as well as the hands-on device sessions.

One of the most interesting cases I had the opportunity to observe was an AVM of the inferior mesenteric artery. The AVM was successfully treated with NBCA-Lipiodol.

A typical day in the interventional radiology department at Sant’Andrea Hospital in Rome is very busy and dynamic. Work is carried out in two angiography suites that are operational non-stop. CT- guided procedures are also performed in a dedicated session twice per week, along with diagnostic vascular CT. The rest of the activities are dedicated to the care of patients in the outpatient clinics and in hospital setting, with two beds for overnight stay with capacity to host up to six patients per week.
