Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander readers are advised this vale contains the name of a person who has died.

Vale Simone Arnol 🤍

cbOne and 8 Hele Gallery are mourning the loss of a dear friend and one of our most generous artists.

Simone was a kind, generous and humble leader, an innovative force in Far North Queensland arts and First Nations fashion and textile design. Grounded in deep respect for culture, she honoured Ancestors and was guided by Elders, Country and community. Her legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.

Her passing is a profound loss to her family, community, and the wider arts and fashion sectors. Her work, her stories, and her unwavering commitment to Country endure.

Born in Gimuy/Cairns on Gimuy Walubara Yidinji Country, Simone was a proud descendant of the Gunggandji Peoples, with Sicilian heritage through her mother. Her practice, works across photography, textiles, fashion and painting sharing powerful stories of , Nth Queensland first nations culture, history, resilience and identity.

She gave so much to community through her work with the Yarrabah Arts & Cultural Precinct and Menmuny Museum, mentoring others with quiet strength.

A leading voice in First Nations fashion, Simone’s impact was widely recognised, including being named Fashion Designer of the Year at the National Indigenous Fashion Awards in 2024, alongside receiving the Queensland Regional Art Awards’ Award of Excellence.

Always remembered. Always honoured. 🤍

In support of Simone’s loved ones, cbOne and 8 Hele Gallery will be helping to raise funds.

For those who wish to support, photographic works from Simone and Bernard’s ‘Emanate’ and ‘Way Way – Breathe’ series are available through cbOne and 8 Hele, with proceeds contributing to a fundraiser supporting Simone’s family.

on until 25th April

More time to see! We’re extending this compelling exhibition through to Saturday 25 April 2026.

The work of Sylvia Wilson and Natalie Scholtz is receiving a great response, and we’d love to give as many people as possible the chance to see it over the April school holidays and public holidays.

Between Bodies is the first collaboration by Sylvia Wilson and Natalie Scholtz, two women of colour whose metaphysical portraits navigate identity, belonging and Australianness.

Sylvia Wilson, a First Nations Martu curator and visual artist, navigates the inherited weight of culture, Country, and continuity shaped through both disconnection and reclamation.

Natalie Scholtz, a migrant child of South African and Iranian parents, carries the legacies of diaspora, displacement, and cultural translation, continually negotiating what it means to call this place home.

These two West Australian contemporary women painters came together for a shared studio residency at cbOne Studios in January 2026. Alongside each other they confronted and unravelled their unsettled ideas of belonging through their art practices.

Their works meet in the in-between: in bodies that hold layered histories, in cultures that are both learned and lived, and in identities forged across multiple worlds. Through paint, gesture, and figuration, they assemble fragments of self and place, balancing the real and the imagined, the celebratory and the uncertain.

Between Bodies presents recent works by each artist and new collaborative works where their portraits of each othershift into otherworldly visions.

In partnership with Martumili Artists

This project is supported by CTIS Arts SNAP WA.

Do make sure you see these works in person and feel their energy in real life. Come in for a chat about this special project and welcome to bring little ones over the school holidays.

Every work begins with the surface. A carefully prepared ground gives artists the freedom to focus on the act of making, with the knowledge it will last for generations to come.

If you’d like to learn more about our in-house priming services or are curious about which surface might work best for your practice, our team would love to chat.

is now open!

A huge thank you to Sylvia and Natalie for their powerful show and for making the journey to join us for the opening and artist talk on Saturday.
And thank you to everyone who came along and helped make it such a special celebration, especially on a long weekend. It meant so much for these two artists from the West to reconnect with old friends, meet new ones, and hear how deeply their work resonates.
Mark Chapman shared how the project began while he was giving workshops at Martumili Artists. He said, “When I first saw Sylvia’s works in Newman, I thought, wow — how come the ladies all have their hands behind their back? And Sylvia said to me, because they lead with their hearts.”
That sense of leading with the heart is also what connects Sylvia and Natalie. As they put it: “Going with what you feel — putting my heart and soul on canvas.” Their first spontaneous collaboration in Fremantle revealed this bond instantly: “I heard Natalie before I saw her, and we just started chatting. She had a fancy lipstick and we used it to draw on the pavement — we just started drawing together.”
That moment sparked the idea for a studio residency at Chapman & Bailey. They fell into a natural rhythm: Sylvia working in the mornings, a crossover at midday, and Natalie working into the evening. “We had time, we had space, and we had an ending — we just danced almost immediately.” Their collaborative works reflect that dance: drawing themselves, each other, and whatever emerged in the moment.
Sylvia’s goal was “to get out of my comfort zone,” and these bold new works truly do that.

Between Bodies is on show until mid April at cbOne Gallery.

We are very excited for this exhibition and invite you to join the artists in celebrating this special collaboration.

This project began during Mark’s regular workshop trips to Martumili Artists. He got to know Martu artist and curator Sylvia Wilson at the art centre and was blown away by her powerful portraits. They made plans for Sylvia to come to Melbourne for studio residency and professional development. Together with Natalie Scholtz, an artist and friend, they had an extraordinary time working alongside each other and exploring new materials and ideas.

It’s means so much to us to support such an artist-led collaboration, especially two women of indigenous and migrant ancestry coming to Melbourne from WA to strengthen their professional development. They are at the cusp of making ambitious artwork, bolstering their confidence in their own voices and extending their world view through connections to artists, curators and collectors. This show is especially timed to honour International Women’s Day which is on Sunday 8 March 2026.

Look forward to seeing you tomorrow!

Always celebrating incredible women artists — but especially proud to launch this show in honour of International Women’s Day 2026

Between Bodies
Sylvia Wilson & Natalie Scholtz
Saturday 7 March 3.30 - 5.30 pm
Opening event and artists in conversation, all welcome

Between Bodies is the first collaboration by Sylvia Wilson and Natalie Scholtz, two women of colour whose metaphysical portraits navigate identity, belonging and Australianness.

Martu artist and curator Sylvia Wilson, joined forces with artist Natalie Scholtz, a migrant child of South African and Iranian parents, to come to Melbourne for studio residency with cbOne Studios in January.

“Their works meet in the in-between: in bodies that hold layered histories, in cultures that are both learned and lived, and in identities forged across multiple worlds. Through paint, gesture, and figuration, they assemble fragments of self and place, balancing the real and the imagined, the celebratory and the uncertain.

Here, Australianness is not a fixed category but a spirited, shifting state—something constructed through portrait, story, and encounter. The exhibition becomes both a questioning and a celebration: of home, of identity, of how we become and unbecome Australian in contemporary times.

Looking forward to seeing Sylvia and Natalie return for the opening celebration on Saturday, and hear their experiences of this special development project.

We’re currently installing and you’re welcome to drop in for a sneak peek preview!
