It seems self evident that parenting style must have an impact on children's relational aggression but what exactly is the relationship? Kawabata et al (2011) explored this question using a meta-analysis of 48 studies. They identified four distinct parenting styles; positive parenting, psychologically controlling parenting, negative/harsh parenting, & uninvolved parenting. As expected, more positive parenting, including parental warmth and emotional sensitivity, was related to lower levels of relational aggression, & more harsh parenting, psychologically controlling parenting (i.e., paternal), & uninvolved parenting were associated with increased relational aggression. Positive parenting provides a safe & secure world where children can learn positive social behaviours, empathy & inhibition of negative behaviours. Their secure attachment allows the development of positive representations of relationships and hence they are less prone to make negative interpretations of ambiguous social information and react with aggression. Its a much better approach!
