The RFDS pays tribute to Ted Egan AO, a much-loved Territorian, bush musician and storyteller. 🕊️

As the quintessential bush storyteller, Ted could wring a heart wrenching song out of a beer carton.

Through his life growing up during World War II, teaching in a bush school, working with remote communities and performing in Alice Springs and around the country, Ted personified many values that we also cherish at the Flying Doctor.

We thank Ted for his significant contribution to the Territory and bush communities, and extend our condolences to family, friends and all who knew him. 💙

Happy 80th Birthday, Country Hour! 📻🎉

Congratulations to the ABC Rural's Country Hour for 80 years on the airwaves — keeping rural and remote Australia connected and heard.

This week, our very own Bek Garrett joined a special anniversary broadcast live from Stokes Hill Wharf in Darwin to chat all things RFDS. ✈️

🎟️ If you’re in town, don’t forget to stop by the RFDS Darwin Tourist Facility on the Wharf! It’s the perfect place to dive into the history of both the RFDS and the Bombing of Darwin: rfdsdarwin.com.au

Welcome aboard, Ahrens Group! 🧡

For generations, the Ahrens family has been a loyal supporter of the RFDS through donations, volunteering, advocacy and infrastructure delivery.

Now, we've entered a new three-year major partnership to support the delivery of critical emergency, primary and preventative health care in remote and regional communities. 🤝

The Ahrens badge will fly with RFDS 'flying intensive care unit' VH-FVE. ✈️🟧

🗣️ “As a family business with deep regional roots, it’s personal to us to ensure our employees, customers and communities in which we operate have access to essential healthcare services, no matter where they are.” – Stefan Ahrens, Managing Director

We’re incredibly humbled to have landed the 2025 InnovationAus.com Award in the ‘GovTech’ category last night for our Virtual Emergency Centre in outback SA! 🖥️

Since opening in William Creek in 2024, the Virtual Emergency Centre has already saved lives and avoided multiple aeromedical retrievals, giving patients the ability to connect instantly with a doctor and begin treatment under remote clinical guidance — more than 500km from the nearest hospital.

🗣️ "Judges praised the RFDS SA/NT for pushing the boundaries of what modern remote health care can look like, blending digital systems, emergency protocols and community-based support to deliver critical care where it has never been available before."

Thank you to the Outback Communities Authority whose $1 million contribution through the Australian Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program helped make this innovation possible.

We also acknowledge the William Creek Progress Association and thank the Awards sponsors, including TechnologyOne, sponsor of the GovTech category.

Bush run team, assemble! ✈️

Our multi-disciplinary community health team of doctors, specialist nurses, allied health professionals and of course our pilots, deliver vital preventative care to some of the most remote communities via our fly-in clinics or 'bush runs'. 🍃

From diabetes education to mental health support, our team brings care directly to people who would otherwise travel hundreds of kilometres for services. 🚗

Last year in SA alone, our team provided more than 6,700 face-to-face consultations and another 5,590 digital (phone/video) consultations. Truly remarkable work! 💙

Meet Dr Sophie Ootes! 👋

Part of the team at our Port Augusta Base, Sophie was recently named South Australia's Rural Generalist in Training of the Year at the 2025 RACGP Awards.

Sophie's journey to rural medicine was anything but linear. Originally from South Australia, she studied post-graduate medicine in Sydney, cut her teeth in hospital medicine in Ballarat, and then returned home to pursue general practice training.

Her path wound through sports medicine in metro areas, rural postings in Clare SA, and now to the wide red landscapes of the outback with the RFDS. ✈️

🗣️ “What I love about rural generalism is the variety... One minute you’re consulting on chronic disease management, the next you’re flying out for a retrieval or handling a remote emergency over the phone."

🚨 RED ALERT!

🕐 From 1am tonight, three solar flares will light up South Australian skies – potentially the biggest aurora event in recent history.

☀️ Until then, enjoy these breathtaking shots captured from the RFDS cockpit during May 2024’s Southern Lights over the Spencer Gulf.

🗣️ "I’m gonna be home for Christmas. I have a big mob family waiting for me to come home."

In April, 64-year-old Otto Dann suffered a serious stroke in his community of Gunbalanya, 300km east of Darwin.

After months of treatment at Royal Darwin Hospital, he was transferred to Palmerston Regional Hospital’s rehabilitation ward, on the outskirts of Darwin, where he spent weeks re-learning skills affected by the stroke: movement, speech, strength, and daily living.

Otto’s rehab was long and arduous. This meant returning home wasn’t as simple as booking a flight or jumping in a car.

Coordinating his discharge and return took careful planning, with hospital, community and family working alongside the RFDS to ensure a safe air transfer.

Today, Otto's safely settled in his new home overlooking the billabong. 🖼️

Meet Ada… who’s already dreaming big! 💫

Not only does she want to be a doctor when she grows up, she wants to be part of the RFDS team. ✈️

During her preschool health check in Oodnadatta in outback SA, Ada got to dress the part and enjoy a behind-the-scenes tour with the RFDS crew. 🩺

Thanks to Remote & Isolated Children's Exercise, incorporating Outback Childcare. for helping make Ada’s dream day possible, as well as our team for always going above and beyond for bush kids. 💙
