Employer Spotlight!

This month, we’re proud to shine the spotlight on West Beach Parks, a much-loved coastal destination and a valued partner in building an inclusive workforce.

Stretching along Adelaide’s coastline, West Beach Parks welcomes thousands of visitors each year across its caravan parks, accommodation options, golf course, and recreational spaces. It’s a vibrant community hub where families holiday, locals connect, and memorable experiences are created every day.

But what makes this partnership especially meaningful is a shared belief: that inclusive employment strengthens workplaces and communities.

Through their partnership with Barkuma, West Beach Parks has committed to creating opportunities for people with disability to contribute their skills, grow their confidence and be valued members of the team. It’s a practical demonstration that inclusion is not just a statement of intent, it’s something we build together, day by day.

Inclusive workplaces don’t happen by accident. They happen when organisations are willing to ask, “How?” instead of “Why?” and West Beach Parks continues to lead by example.

Thank you to the team at West Beach Parks for your commitment to diversity, collaboration and community.

If your organisation is ready to explore how inclusive employment can strengthen your workforce, start the conversation with us today.

Fringe season is almost here and Adelaide is getting ready!
Over the next month, thousands of artists will bring stages, streets and venues across our city to life as part of the Adelaide Fringe.

With an incredible number of shows spanning comedy, music, theatre, cabaret and more, there truly is something for everyone.
What makes Fringe even more powerful is its commitment to inclusion. The festival offers a range of accessibility options to support people of all abilities to experience the arts, from accessible venues and Auslan-interpreted performances to relaxed sessions and detailed access information.

If you’re planning your Fringe calendar, you can explore accessibility details and booking information here:

An inclusive community is one where everyone can participate, connect and celebrate together. Fringe season is a wonderful reminder of what that looks like in action.

This week, 38 young people from across metropolitan Adelaide commenced Barkuma’s Transition Program, taking important steps toward life beyond school.

The program supports young people with developmental disabilities and learning difficulties to build confidence, independence and workplace readiness. Through group learning and individualised support, each participant is guided to explore their strengths, interests and future pathways.

The first week has already been filled with connection, new experiences, practical skill building and laying strong foundations for the year ahead.

Celebrating nearly 10 years of amazing work at Barkuma! 🎉

Chelsea started her journey with us during her Year 10 work experience, and after finishing high school, she was offered a position right here! She's been a valued member of our team ever since. Her favourite part of the job? Working together with her teammates! 🤝💪

Over the years, Chelsea has honed her skills in machine operations, general production, assembly, and quality control.

A calmer space for travellers

We’re pleased to see a new accessibility initiative launched at Adelaide Airport with the opening of a dedicated Sensory Room.

The Sensory Room has been designed to support people who may feel overwhelmed by busy airport environments, including people with disability, neurodivergent travellers, children and families. It offers a quiet, low-stimulus space to pause, regulate and reset before or after a flight.

Inclusive design like this helps make travel more accessible and less stressful for everyone in our community.

You can learn more about the Sensory Room, including where to find it and who it’s for, here > https://bit.ly/3ZseGMp

At Barkuma, we value initiatives that support dignity, inclusion and choice, in everyday life and in the spaces we all share.

Today is a day for music lovers

Music has a special way of bringing people together, and today is one of those days many music fans look forward to each year. Across Australia, people are tuning in, sharing songs, and celebrating the music that’s soundtracked their year.

Here at Barkuma, many of our team are big music lovers too, and the triple j Hottest 100 has become a familiar and much-loved part of the summer calendar. It’s less about rankings and more about the shared experience, listening, reminiscing, discovering new artists and enjoying the joy music brings.

Whether you’ve got it playing in the background, are listening with friends, or just dipping in and out through the day, we hope today’s soundtrack brings a smile.

🎧 What song, artist or genre always lifts your mood?

Looking after each other in the heat.

Our community is heading into a significant heatwave from Saturday 24 January, with four days of very hot weather forecast and temperatures expected to reach 40 degrees and above.

During extreme heat, small actions, like checking in on someone or taking a break in a cool space, can make a real difference. Based on advice from SA Health, here are a few simple ways to take care of yourself and others:

A few things that really help
• Sip water often, even if you don’t feel thirsty
• Spend time in cool or air-conditioned spaces where possible
• Wear light, loose-fitting clothing
• Take it easy during the hottest parts of the day
• Never leave children or pets in cars
• Check in on family, friends or neighbours who may need extra support

If you or someone you’re with starts to feel unwell, dizzy, confused or nauseous, seek medical advice straight away.

Please take care over the coming days and look out for one another 💙
