Why is IDAHOBIT Important Today?

The recent nature of the LGBTQIA+ human rights movement means that stigma and discrimination are still prevelant across the world. This is also true in Australia, where:

68% of LGBTQIA+ employees are not out to everyone at work (1)

2 in 3 LGBTQIA+ youth experience abuse due to their identity (2)

35% of LGBTQIA+ Australians have experienced verbal abuse in the past 12 months (3)

8.6 Australians die every day by su***de. That’s more than double the road toll

75% of those who take their own life are male

Su***de is the leading cause of death for Australians between the ages of 15 and 44.

The su***de rate in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples is twice that of their non-Indigenous counterparts.

People in rural populations are 2 times more likely to take their life by su***de by su***de.

LGBTIQ+ community members report having attempted su***de in the past 12 months at a rate 10 times higher than the general Australian
population

Beyond the tragic loss of the person, the impact of su***de deaths
are felt by up to 135 people, including family members, work colleagues, friends, first responders at the time of death.

By taking the time for an R U OK? conversation and genuinely listening with an open mind, we can all help the people in our world feel supported and connected.

Let the people in your world know
you’re here, to really hear, because a conversation could change a life.

R U OK?Day 2023 is Thursday 14 September
and is our national day of action when we remind Australians that every day is the day to ask, ‘are you OK?’ and start a meaningful conversation whenever they spot the signs that someone they care about might be struggling with life.

It’s Thursday !!!!
