Did you know that Calvary has a dedicated team that supports and assists specialists and staff members who are interested in research?

This knowledgeable and experienced group provides guidance and support with research ethics and governance processes, study start-up and coordination; to ensure that research conducted at our sites and services meets regulatory and legal requirements.

Orthopaedic specialist A/Prof David Campbell has undertaken many studies throughout his career, and is currently a site co-ordinator of a new study looking at joint replacement infections.

“Infection is a risk for patients having joint replacement surgery, and we haven’t seen a big change in these rates over the last 20 years. The study that we are contributing to at Calvary is looking at several aspects – things like which antibiotics are best to use, and how long to use them for. Data contributions are coming in from all over the world, with thousands of participants involved. We are hoping the results will significantly improve outcomes for patients and have a profound impact on their lives in the future.”

Calvary encourages the take up of research opportunities, and several of our specialists are undertaking studies across our hospitals.

Yesterday was , so we thought we'd share some of the initiatives that we have in place across our three SA hospitals and aged care facilities, with thanks to our regional ICT team.

We are sending functional mobile phones that are no longer in use to the Bedford Group, a well-established South Australian social enterprise supporting people with disability. Prior to dispatch, all devices undergo secure data erasure, and then they will be repurposed through Bedford’s partnership with Backpacks 4 SA Kids INC. providing essential communication tools to children in crisis care.

For other ICT hardware—including monitors, laptops, desktops, printers, servers, switches, and accessories, we work with Compnow through their SustainIT program. This initiative ensures environmentally responsible disposal and full data sanitisation.

These partnerships not only support our sustainability goals but also contribute positively to the community.

is the rapid decline in mental function that develops over hours or days. It differs from dementia, as this develops over months or years.

Yesterday, for World Delirium Awareness Day, staff on Lynch Ward spread awareness around the hospital by wearing a touch of orange and initiating conversations about the condition.

Delirium can be triggered by surgery, infections, dehydration, pain, or medication changes, so it is important that staff, family and friends have an awareness of this condition and can work together to notice changes and escalate care.

Changes to be on the look-out for may include;
• sudden confusion
• attention problems
• alertness changes
• hallucinations or delusions

Simple interventions can help combat delirium by reducing the mental load experienced by patients. Supporting them to use their hearing aids and glasses, providing familiar foods, encouraging access to photos of loved ones, or playing favourite music can all help maintain orientation and reduce cognitive stress.

Please join us in welcoming our Graduate Nurse Transition Program (GNTP) participants for 2026!

These nurses have started this week, having been successful in obtaining a placement in this structured program, designed to help them confidently transition from student to registered clinician.

Supported by dedicated coordinators, preceptors and clinical educators, the program includes a comprehensive orientation, study days, and ongoing learning opportunities to help consolidate knowledge and build strong clinical practice.

Here at Calvary Adelaide, our 50 GNTPs will work across a range of advanced acute medical and surgical areas, including major orthopaedic, cardiac and neurosurgical departments over the next 12 months.

We warmly welcome them to the Calvary family, and wish them a long and fulfilling career.

Celebrating the festive season and the end to another great year, the last all-staff lunch of 2025 was another big hit.

Served by the executive and management teams, the traditional Christmas fare cooked by our marvellous hospitality team, was enjoyed by many – along with the annual gift bags with sweet treats to take home.

These gift bags are coordinated across all our hospital sites, with festive items for staff and volunteers to enjoy as a small token of our thanks for all they do throughout the year.

Thank you to everyone who helped source the items, pack, and deliver all the bags. It is a monumental effort to do this for each staff member and volunteer, so we thank you sincerely for bringing some extra Christmas cheer to your colleagues.

Our wonderful volunteers came together last week for a special Christmas lunch.

Lovingly prepared by our hospitality team, the lunch was a fun way for the volunteers to connect and celebrate in the lead up to the festive season. Managers and staff were on hand to ensure the volunteers enjoyed themselves, and know just how much they are appreciated.

Volunteers work across the hospital in many different areas - looking after patients and helping staff in a myriad of ways.
A huge thank you to each and every one of our dedicated volunteers, and a very Merry Christmas from the bottom of our hearts!
