Postpartum depression can be a very real and very scary experience for a new mum. It is during postpartum that a woman will be coping with being a new mum and looking after a newborn.
My tips for getting through the fourth trimester where it seems the most adjustment takes place is below and only a few ideas that might make it easier to get through and to feel supported:
* Make sure you have enough support around you to support your mental health, as this can be the time that postpartum depression may occur.
* Ask for help if you need it, especially if you're struggling with feeding, sleep, or baby is unsettled. Do not feel that your feelings on anything related to yourself or your baby are insignificant.
*Make a plan for your postpartum. Write down exactly who will be doing what. Food to be organised in the freezer by who, cleaning to be done, shopping or even who will bathe baby and what you can delegate to others. Write it down.
*Make sure you are resting, eating properly, and setting time aside for yourself, too, as this is important in all aspects. If nutrition is poor or you're too stressed, then it may affect your milk production.
The most important thing is that you feel if you are experiencing postpartum depression or feeling overwhelmed by being a new mum that you speak with your doula who will most likely tell you to see your GP and get a referral to see a qualified psychologist who can assist you. You do not need to feel like you are alone
