Bridget Sugden Physio

Bridget Sugden Physio I came into physiotherapy as a new graduate with a pretty clear goal: I wanted to be your family physiotherapist.

I have worked at Europa Medical Centre since 2011 and over the years, I have enjoyed becoming a part of the community in Salisbury Downs.

This is something I am such a big advocate for! Exercise is safe even if you have osteoarthritis, especially when you start with small amounts with gradually progres. Not only is it safe, it is actually is beneficial for arthritic pain!

This article highlights the importance of losing weight or preventing weight gain, not necessarily to reduce the pressure on the joints, but to help reduce weight around the waist as this helps to lower inflammatory chemicals in the body. When inflammatory chemicals are elevated, they can cause further damage to cartilage in our joints, so weight loss from the abdomen is an important component of joint health!

Please have a read! And feel free to ask any questions!

Knee pain from osteoarthritis needn’t go hand in hand with ageing – or running. The major culprit, particularly as we get older, is weight gain.

A good reminder to always talk to your health professional about any problems you are having; you might be surprised what you can get help with!

I am more than happy to discuss any issues with patients and if it's something outside my scope, I will endeavour to refer you onto another health professional who can help.

Exercise exercise exercise!

I know I sound like a broken record or a nag sometimes. But we KNOW exercise works! Hence why I prescribe it so often 😉

Low back pain (LBP) is the leading global cause of years lived with disability and places a significant socioeconomic burden upon individuals and health systems worldwide.

A recent JoP study found that people who have experienced low back pain are open to using exercise to reduce their risk of recurrence; however, they tend to prefer exercise programs that differ from those exercise programs that are known to be effective.

Plantar Fasciitis is a common complaint, and when dealt with correctly, can often resolve quite nicely. It's an unpleasant condition, especially for those spending a lot of time on their feet. Strengthening is a commonly missed treatment for plantar fasciitis, and is something I strongly encourage. See this blog to find out more about it and if there's something you can do for your heel pain.

Plantar Fasciitis causes arch and heel pain, especially when first standing up and worsening towards the end of the day. Physio can help improve your symptoms.

Following on with Women's Health from my post last week... The Australian Physiotherapy Association posted this last week for Women's Health Week. It is such a useful summary of information, and really highlights the importance of exercise during and after pregnancy, acknowledging appropriate limitations.

There are numerous potential health benefits for women who exercise during and after pregnancy. After all, childbirth is often compared to a marathon and therefore, preparation should be considered.

To coincide with , Vice-chair of Queensland chapter of the Womens, Mens and Pelvic Health group Brooke Dobo, APAM, and Men’s and Pelvic Health Physiotherapist Tory Toogood, MACP, contribute five evidence based practice points about the benefits of exercise during and after pregnancy.

This is proudly brought to you by the Physiotherapy Research Foundation ( ) – supporting research translation.

I think this is an interesting read regarding ACL rehabilitation, as a lot of people may not be aware that there is a non-surgical option.

APA Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist and Senior Research Fellow at La Trobe University Dr Adam Culvenor, FACP, recently studied the comparative results between ACL reconstructions and rehabilitation.

The world-first clinical trial comparing early ACL reconstruction to rehabilitation alone for people after ACL rupture, found that rehabilitation alone was most beneficial for knee cartilage.
