Bill Shorten Nat Cook MP

I would like to take this opportunity to thank my new business manager Lily, for helping me write this blog post about time management and the importance it has in my life. Lucy has also put a quote in the blog which will give people an idea of one of the many reasons why I have been struggling so badly with my mental health over the last year.
In this blog “Time Management“ I spoke about people like me needing more support hours to complete the basic day-to-day tasks. Not everyday is the same, there are so many factors to take into account.

For anyone's life, time management is very important. For someone with a disability, it is even more critical.  For your average person, getting up in the morning, having a shower and getting dressed can be a 15 minute exercise. For someone like me, this can take upwards of 2 hours. When I

MY DAY AT THE GRANGE BEACH

Earlier this year we purchased my very own Beach Wheelchair from Tangible Workshop which allows me to go to the beach whenever I choose to do so. Together with my team we decided it was best to have two support workers alongside my mum and myself for safety. Moving the Beach wheelchair requires one person to push the beach chair from behind and one person at the front to steer. I also bring along my own portable hoist which hoists me from my wheelchair into the beach chair.
On the public holiday myself, Mum and my support workers, Lucy and Keith decided to go to Grange Beach. We had a lovely day using my beach wheelchair, having dip in the sea and a spending time relaxing on the sand. We had a nice lunch at the Grange Hotel afterwards I had a delicious chicken schnitzel with mushroom sauce. It was such a beautiful day. Having this beach wheelchair has changed my life, going to the beach on a warm sunny day is a part of the Australian culture. This wheelchair allows me to go down to the beach and experience what so many people take for granted. What I want to show people is that anything is possible, and we now can have access to equipment like this which allows me to enjoy the beach which for so many years wasn’t possible. 🏖️☀️🐚

Changing Places Australia

One of the most frustrating things about my disability is not being able to go to the toilet independently. Throughout my life, I’ve had to constantly call for support from workers or my mum to assist me to go to the bathroom.

When I was young I was scared of dogs. As a toddler living in the UK, we had 2 small Jack Russells. One was quiet & placid & the other was energetic & bouncy. Given that I liked to be on the floor rolling around the energetic dog would treat me as a toy. This led to my fear of any dogs that approached me for many years.

In 2009, when I was 10 years old Mum & Elliot decided to get a dog however, I was very nervous. I said to mum “If you get a dog I’m going to run away”. When adopted Ruby I was anxious at first but over time built a special relationship with her as did the rest of the family, especially mum. Tragically, she passed away in 2015 due to a car accident. This left us all heartbroken.

A few weeks later we adopted Topaz. Yet again, I was nervous about getting a new dog especially because he was a boy dog & it reminded me of the jack Russell I use to have in the UK. Just like Ruby, I learned to trust & love Topaz. Topaz is a beautiful baby boy who is my protector & treats me like a human jungle gym but he’s always great for a cuddle & a kiss.

In 2017, we decided to adopt our second dog Bella from Holly’s Rescue for Senior Dogs (LINK). This was an excellent distraction for me as I had been going through some really bad personal circumstances at the time. When I first saw Bella, surprisingly, being a rescue dog, she gave me eye contact & saw me as a person she could trust. This was very special due to her rough past & mistreatment from previous owners. It was not an easy road adding Bella to our family due to Bella’s ingrained behavioral issues & anxiety. However, mum & I did not want to give up on her like past owners. Bella loves to have a lick of my coffee in the mornings but my most special time with her is when she sits on my lap when I’m on the floor doing exercises.

The reason why my dogs are so important is because not only are they great pets but they’re also very therapeutic for myself & the entire family. I can cuddle Topaz & Bella every day which makes me feel very secure & happy & helps me with my anxiety. Alike myself I’m sure there are many people out there with disabilities that love their animals & find comfort in them every day.
