A really common frustration: “They can do it in the clinic… but not at home/school.”

That doesn’t mean therapy isn't working. It usually means the skill is still new, and it’s attached to the exact setting it was practised in, same room, same routine, same expectations.

Part of good therapy is planning for the real world: different places, different people, different time of the day.

The idea is to build those bridges carefully so the skill transfer outside the clinic.

This one is worth saying out loud: when you’re using NDIS funding for therapy, it’s reasonable to ask about qualifications and professional registration.

The NDIS notes that therapy supports should be provided by qualified allied health professionals who are registered with the relevant professional body.

That’s not about being suspicious. It’s about making sure you’re getting the right support from someone properly trained, and that your funding is being used the way it’s intended.

All our therapists are university qualified and hold current professional registration with their relevant peak professional body.

We’ve a blog post focused on NDIS and Speech Pathology, because the questions are constant and totally fair.

What funding can be used? What do people mean by “therapy supports”? What’s actually helpful to bring to a first appointment?

The NDIS describes therapy supports as being provided by qualified allied health professionals with relevant professional registration.

We’ve translated that into plain English

World Music Therapy Week (10–15 April) is a chance to notice how music therapy supports people in our community every day.

At Creative Therapy Adelaide, music therapy is delivered by registered music therapists as an evidence-based allied health profession, alongside our speech pathology services, in partnership with families, schools and community services.

Whether it’s supporting communication, regulation, rehabilitation, early development or wellbeing, music therapy offers a different way to make sense of experiences and connect – with ourselves, with others, and with the world around us.

If you’re curious about music therapy, you can learn more about the profession and find registered music therapists across Australia via the Australian Music Therapy Association: austmta.org.au

A quick practical reminder for anyone coming to a gated site.

Please check your appointment reminder, that’s where the access details and code are included. It’s a small thing, but it saves you arriving flustered and saves everyone the awkward “I’m outside” phone-tag.

We want your session to start at the door feeling easy.

Therapy isn't only what happens in the room.

You might see “non-face-to-face” mentioned in the NDIS world, it’s the work that happens outside the session time, like writing notes, preparing resources, or coordinating with others when that’s part of the support.

Why it matters? It helps keep things organised, consistent and comprehensive!

There’s something special about learning an instrument: it’s structured, but it’s also play.

You practise listening. You practise timing. You practise sticking with something that starts off awkward and slowly becomes yours. And you get little wins you can actually hear.

It doesn’t have to be formal lessons, either. Sometimes it’s just someone finding “their” instrument and making it part of the week.

Picture Description: Yellow graphic with a small photo of hands playing a piano/keyboard and the text “BENEFITS OF PLAYING A MUSIC INSTRUMENT”.

Sometimes a person who’s been happily attending suddenly disengages. Less talking, less trying, more “nope”.

That doesn’t automatically mean therapy “isn’t working”. Often it means something needs adjusting: the connection, the pace, the activity, the time of day, the way we start and so on. Remember everyone is different.

We pay attention to that shift, because it’s useful information and because the goal isn’t perfect participation.
