We are delighted to have introduced a purely robotic approach to radical cystectomy to one of our hospital networks in South Australia.

Over the last 12 months, Dr Akbar Ashrafi has employed the USC technique for robotic-assisted radical cystectomy and extended lymph node dissection with intra-corporeal urinary diversion for patients with muscle-invasive bladder cancer. The da Vinci Xi robotic platform facilitates complex multi-quadrant abdominal surgery in the least invasive manner possible.

A minimally invasive robotic approach can be associated with significant peri-operative benefits for patients, including lower blood loss, less pain, shorter length of stay, reduced peri-operative complications, and earlier return to daily activities.

First use of the state-of-the-art Fujifilm L51k 13mm drop-in ultrasound transducer in Australia!

Initial impressions were positive as the technology integrated seamlessly with the da Vinci Xi robotic system, providing real-time high-resolution imaging during robotic-assisted partial nephrectomy. The compact and flexible probe delivered detailed and clear views of the renal tumor and surrounding tissues.

Special thanks to the FUJIFILM Australia, Device Technologies, and Calvary Adelaide Hospital teams for their hard work and dedication in setting up this trial.

We are excited to continue exploring the potential of new technology to improve patient outcomes in minimally invasive surgery.

On World Cancer Day, let's raise awareness of urological cancers!

Here are some key points to keep in mind:

- Blood in the urine may be a warning sign. If you notice blood in your urine, make an appointment with your doctor immediately. Blood in your urine can be the first symptom of bladder cancer.

- PSA screening saves lives. PSA screening significantly reduces prostate cancer mortality with increasing benefits with longer follow-up to 16 years. The Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia recommends offering PSA testing starting at age 50, and earlier for men with a family history of prostate cancer.

- Testicular self-examination is important. Testicular cancer, when detected early, has a cure rate close to 100%. Men with undescended testicles or a family/personal history of testicular cancer should be diligent about self-examining.

- Say no to smoking. Smoking triples the risk for bladder cancer and contributes to 50% of all bladder cancers. Smoking is also a risk factor for kidney cancer.

The RACGP college has updated its recommendations to support PSA testing in men 50 years and above.

This will help detect prostate cancer in its early stages. Great work by Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia in advocating for men with prostate cancer!

Here's the news you need to hear today.

In response to our call for GPs to provide PSA testing for earlier detection of prostate cancer, the RACGP has agreed to overhaul its practice codes.

So many men have had their lives cut short as a result of late diagnosis, and many men’s lives will now be saved. ❤

Thank you for helping us achieve this. We never give up. 💙✊
