๐Ÿ’ฅCHRONIC NECK PAIN๐Ÿ’ฅ

๐Ÿ˜ฃ - Tom came in with chronic neck pain and tightness.

๐Ÿ”- After assessing we not only identified some limitations in his neck movement but also in his shoulder and thoracic mobility.

โœ… - He has now regained this mobility and no longer feels pain and tightness in his neck. Another example of the issue not actually being at the area of pain but rather at the surrounding structures.

๐Ÿ’ฅSTIFF LOW BACK?๐Ÿ’ฅ

๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ - If you have a stiff lower back this is a great exercise to improve rotation in your lumbar spine (lower back).

๐Ÿคธ๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ- Using the ground as foundation you can safely isolate and rotate your lower back.

โœ… - The goal is to achieve at least 30 degrees of rotation.

๐Ÿ’ฅBACK PAIN๐Ÿ’ฅ

๐Ÿ˜ฃ - Jasmin visited the clinic with lower back pain. After sustaining an injury she tried a couple different physiotherapists however had no luck.

๐Ÿ” - After undergoing a thorough assessment we found that forward flexion invited the most pain however found dysfunctions in other movements also.

๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ - This is evidence of her improvements in only one session moving pain free. Awesome stuff Jasmin!

๐Ÿ’ฅNECK PAIN + TIGHTNESS๐Ÿ’ฅ

๐Ÿ˜ฃ - Rees visited the clinic with a long-standing history of neck pain and stiffness. In the past few years he has suffered a C6-7 fracture, scoliosis of the neck, and a shoulder dislocation.

๐Ÿ” - After undergoing a thorough assessment we not only found limitations in his neck movement which invited pain but also in his mid back (thoracic spine).

๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ - Rees has now been able to restore his neck movement while experiencing no more pain due to his dedication both in-clinic and whilst at home. Amazing work!!

๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ BREATHING AND OUR MOVEMENT ๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ

๐Ÿง˜๐Ÿป- Our breathing is critical in how we coordinate movement. The diaphragm is the star of the show as it is the primary muscle of breathing and helps to maintain our posture and core stability.

๐Ÿ’ก- The actions of breathing in movement can be described in two ways:

Anatomical breathing: Natural breathing as the spine flexes and extends.

E.g. As the body flexes, exhalation disperses the pressure. As the body extends, inhalation helps to open up the thoracic area (mid trunk).

Biomechanical breathing: Ability to handle loads through the body during performance.

E.g. During a deadlift our biomechanical breathing allows us to elevate our strength and stability.

โœ… - Breathing must have an important role in our health and fitness practices.

๐Ÿ† ADVANCED CORE ๐Ÿ†

โ€ผ๏ธ- This is for knowledge basis only and not medical advice. I would encourage you to undergo an assessment by a health professional first prior to attempting these.

๐Ÿ’ก- The core is the centre of the body and it helps to stabilise the trunk during activities that involve leg and arm movements.

โœ… - These exercises can not only help build core strength and stability but teach you how to control your lower back and pelvis together.

๐Ÿคธ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ - All the exercises here are very advanced and I would not recommend these to anyone with an underlying injury or functional limitation.

๐Ÿ˜Š GOOD NEIGHBOUR OR BAD NEIGHBOUR? ๐Ÿ˜ก

๐Ÿ’ก- Our joints alternate between mobile and stable segments.

โ—๏ธ- If a mobile segment becomes stiff, it will try to compensate by stealing mobility from a segment that is supposed to be stable.

๐Ÿ˜ฃ - A stable joint being forced into mobility can be a precursor to pain or injury.

โœ… - Try your best to find these precursors and stop any compensations they may cause.

๐Ÿ’ฅChronic back pain๐Ÿ’ฅ

โ€ผ๏ธ- Tom has been experiencing back pain for almost a decade!

๐Ÿ” - After coming in 2 months ago, we identified areas that could be contributing to his pain.

๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ - These are the improvements in his movement during rotation thus far.

โœ… - Tom is now pain free and continuing his journey to moving better!

๐Ÿ’ฅ SHOULDER ISSUES? ๐Ÿ’ฅ

๐Ÿ’ก- With the shoulder having many anatomical structures contributing to its function, issues with the shoulder are often not isolated to the shoulder.

๐Ÿ’ฅ - Neck and shoulder pain can be the product of a lack of mobility in the thoracic spine.

๐Ÿ‹๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ - Lifting objects overhead such as putting a kayak onto your car, placing an item onto the top shelf, or working as a linesman could invite pain or injury if the individual does not have adequate mobility in the shoulder or thoracic spine.

โœ… - Donโ€™t wait until you canโ€™t move well to appreciate the importance of moving well.

๐Ÿ•น POOR SPINAL CONTROL? ๐Ÿ•น

๐Ÿ” - This drill helps assess your ability to flex your spine segment by segment.

โ—๏ธ- One of the reasons you may be having back issues is from having a poor ability to control your spine during flexion movements such as this.

โœ… - This drill can help us identify what specific area of the back we may need to target.
