Cognitive Behaviour Therapy - What is CBT? CBT is a psychological treatment that has been effective for treating a range of problems including:
Depression, Anxiety disorders, Marital problems, Alcohol and drug use issues as well as Severe mental illness.
CBT helps a person identify and overcome the automatic beliefs they have or the environment has created for them, each belief creates a behaviour from the client. By using specific strategies the counsellor can help the client bring to the forefront, these automatic beliefs ( Automatic beliefs are a instant thought, clients wouldn't be aware) that create a consequence/behaviour to the client as a result of the thought they arent aware of having. CBT identifies these irrational thoughts and digs deeper to the core issue. CBT's end goal is to give the client the tools to help themselves outside of counselling. CBT is good for getting to the core of such problems. Understanding why something is happening or your part you play in helping the situation occur is the real advantage of CBT. From understanding comes prevention or being able to stop the behaviour occuring, therefor creating new outcomes/feelings and responses to what may have caused you issues in the past.
