Helping children achieve their Occupational Therapy (OT) goals makes everyday activities easier, more enjoyable, and builds the skills they need for bigger challenges. It also boosts their independence, confidence, and practical abilities.

Key areas of focus include:

Fine Motor Skills – Strengthen little hands for tasks like mark making, pouring, spooning, buttoning, and using scissors.

Gross Motor Skills – Build balance, coordination, and movement for running, jumping, climbing, and riding a bike.

Sensory Development – Help children respond calmly and confidently to sights, sounds, textures, and movement in daily life.

Daily Life Skills – Encourage independence in dressing, eating, toileting, and following routines.

Using play-based activities, children develop essential skills while having fun.

Check out these:

5 Activities to Build Fine Motor Skills
5 Activities to Build Gross Motor Skills

These simple, engaging activities help children feel confident, independent, and capable. They give children the tools to tackle challenges, enjoy everyday activities, and thrive at home, school, and beyond.

Starting a new class, year level, or school is exciting—but it can feel big for little learners!

At Therapy Hive, our transition visits help children feel calm, confident, and ready. During visits, we:

- Explore the new classroom or school through play and meet teachers.
- Practice routines like hanging up bags, finding seats, and greeting teachers.
- Use visuals, social stories, and play to make new spaces feel familiar.

Families can help at home by:

- Reading back-to-school books and talking about what’s coming.
- Looking at photos or social stories of the new school or teachers.
- Arranging short playdates with classmates.
- Practising independence skills like packing a bag or putting on shoes.
- Keeping daily routines consistent to support confidence and calm.

Small steps make a big difference! Transition support helps children start new beginnings with curiosity and confidence!

At Therapy Hive, we believe every child is capable, curious, and full of potential.

When children are given opportunities to try, problem-solve, and take part in daily routines, they build confidence, independence, and pride in their achievements.

Fostering capable children means:
- Allowing time for them to try things on their own — even if it’s messy or takes longer.
- Offering choices to build decision-making skills and confidence.
- Encouraging problem-solving and persistence through challenges.
- Praising effort, not just the outcome — “You worked so hard on that!”
- Involving children in small responsibilities, like packing their bag, setting the table and dressing themselves. .

Every small success helps children believe in themselves — and that belief is the foundation for lifelong learning and resilience.

Halloween is a time for fun, imagination, and connection — but it can also bring new sights, sounds, and sensations that feel overwhelming for some children. These ideas help children participate at their comfort level, have fun, and build confidence.

5 Steps to Support This Spooky Season!

- Choose Sensory-Friendly Costumes: Soft, tag-free fabrics or favourite pyjamas make dressing up enjoyable. Let children pick their costume or accessories. Face paint can be a fun alternative to masks.

- Practice and Prepare: Talk about what to expect using pictures or videos. Try a short “pretend” trick-or-treat at home or in the garden. Use social stories or roleplay to practice greetings.

- Respect Comfort Levels: Some children may prefer watching from a safe spot, handing out treats, or joining for part of the celebration. Offer breaks or quiet zones if needed.

- Keep It Simple: Small group celebrations, familiar friends, and predictable routines reduce stress. Limit loud music or flashing lights and keep treats and activities manageable.

Celebrate With Fun Activities

Pumpkin Painting – Let your child explore colours and textures while decorating mini pumpkins or paper shapes.

Spooky Sensory Bins – Fill a bin with rice, pasta, or shredded paper and hide Halloween-themed objects for little hands to discover.

Decorating Trick-or-Treat Bags – Stickers, stamps, or simple drawings make custom bags for collecting treats.

“Magic Potions” – Use coloured water for pouring, mixing, and sensory exploration. Safe, hands-on fun!

Halloween Masks – Create simple masks with paper, elastic, and safe decorations. Encourage pretend play and creativity.

Daylight savings can disrupt little ones’ sleep, but a few simple strategies can help your child adjust while keeping bedtime calm and consistent.

Keep routines consistent – Maintain regular times for bedtime, naps, and wake-up, even during the time change. Gradually shift bedtime by 10–15 minutes if needed.

Use a calm bedtime routine – Bath, teeth, story, cuddle. Provide small choices, such as which pyjamas to wear or which book to read, to support your child’s growing independence. Give gentle warnings before bedtime to ease transitions, visual schedules can also support this.

Watch for signs of tiredness – Hyperactivity, tantrums, or falling asleep in the car can indicate your child is not getting enough sleep.

Create a sleep-friendly environment – Keep bedrooms cool, dark, and quiet. Comfort items such as a favourite blanket or stuffed toy can help your child self-soothe.

Encourage daytime activity – Active play during the day helps children fall asleep faster and sleep longer at night.

Stay consistent, patient, and supportive—this helps your child adjust to daylight savings and maintain healthy sleep habits.
