At Therapy Hive, we use play-based challenges to help children develop essential skills like problem-solving, independence, and resilience. Through playful, engaging activities, children learn to think critically, make decisions, and persist when faced with challenges. Simple activities such as stacking blocks, sorting shapes, matching games, or collaborative puzzles are not only fun but also provide meaningful learning opportunities.

Here’s how we integrate problem-solving into our sessions:

Hands-On Learning: Children explore materials and ideas through play. This hands-on approach encourages curiosity, experimentation, and flexible thinking.

Guided Support: Therapists provide prompts, ask open-ended questions, and model strategies to scaffold learning supporting children develop strategies to approach challenges independently over time.

Social Skills: Group problem-solving activities encourage collaboration, turn-taking, sharing ideas, and learning to collaborate with peers and build emotional regulation. Children practice communication and teamwork while building critical thinking skills.

Reflection and Celebration: We guide children to reflect on their successes and challenges, helping them understand that mistakes are part of learning. Celebrating achievements and acknowledging effort builds confidence, resilience, and a growth mindset.

Practical Skill-Building: These activities also support planning, concentration, fine motor coordination, and persistence—all essential skills for everyday life and learning.

By embedding problem-solving into playful experiences, children develop confidence, independence, and resilience in a safe and enjoyable environment. Play becomes a tool not just for fun, but for growth, learning, and lifelong skills.

Following on from our earlier post about supporting children through big transitions, we take these steps further at Therapy Hive by integrating practical, playful strategies into our sessions. Starting a new class, teacher, or school can feel overwhelming, but with our support and guidance, children can feel calm, confident, and ready!

Here’s how we bring transition support into our sessions:

- Exploring New Spaces: Children visit new classrooms, bathrooms, playgrounds, and other areas through play to make spaces feel familiar.

- Practicing Routines: Finding name tags, hanging bags, finding seats, lining up, and other daily routines are rehearsed with guidance and visuals.

- Meeting Educators: Children meet teachers and staff in a calm environment, building familiarity and trust.

- Managing Sensory Experiences: We help children cope with noise, crowds, or new textures through sensory activities and regulation strategies.

- Creating and Using Social Stories: A personalised visual booklet including pictures of the school, new classroom, teacher, and spaces can be reviewed regularly. Aim to look at this once a week ahead of the transition as a reminder of the new environment.

- Family Involvement: Parents are provided with strategies to reinforce routines and support confidence at home, such as packing bags together or practising morning routines.

By building familiarity, practising routines, and supporting sensory regulation, our transition visits give children the tools and confidence to start new beginnings with curiosity and independence.

At Therapy Hive, we engage children in music and movement throughout our sessions to support their development to explore learning in a playful and purposeful way.

Whether we’re using instruments, dancing, reading or games, these activities help children build confidence, connection, and skills. Swipe to see ways we incorporate this in our sessions!

Here are some ideas for home:

• Sing action songs (e.g., *Open Shut Them*, *If You’re Happy and You Know It*)
• Dance to a favourite song together
• Creating “instruments” with everyday objects to explore rhythm
• Pause music randomly and play “freeze!” to build listening skills

Music and movement make learning joyful, engaging, and memorable — and we love bringing this energy into our therapy sessions!

Sensory play helps children explore, regulate, and learn through hands-on experiences. It supports focus, curiosity, and self-regulation while encouraging creativity, problem-solving, and confidence. For sensory seeking children, who actively look for movement, touch, or sound input, sensory play provides safe and structured ways to meet these needs, helping them engage, calm, and focus.

In our therapy sessions, we use sensory activities to support children’s goals, including fine motor skills, gross motor coordination, attention, and self-regulation. Sensory play turns learning into a fun, meaningful experience while helping children practice everyday skills.

Sensory Development – Help children respond calmly and confidently to sights, sounds, textures, and movement in daily life.

Daily Life Skills – Encourage independence in dressing, eating, toileting, and following routines.

Using play-based activities, children develop essential skills while having fun.

At Therapy Hive, we believe every child is capable, curious, and full of potential.

When children are given opportunities to try, problem-solve, and take part in daily routines, they build confidence, independence, and pride in their achievements.

Fostering capable children means:
- Allowing time for them to try things on their own — even if it’s messy or takes longer.
- Offering choices to build decision-making skills and confidence.
- Encouraging problem-solving and persistence through challenges.
- Praising effort, not just the outcome — “You worked so hard on that!”
- Involving children in small responsibilities, like packing their bag, setting the table and dressing themselves. .

Every small success helps children believe in themselves — and that belief is the foundation for lifelong learning and resilience.

Halloween is a time for fun, imagination, and connection — but it can also bring new sights, sounds, and sensations that feel overwhelming for some children. These ideas help children participate at their comfort level, have fun, and build confidence.

5 Steps to Support This Spooky Season!

- Choose Sensory-Friendly Costumes: Soft, tag-free fabrics or favourite pyjamas make dressing up enjoyable. Let children pick their costume or accessories. Face paint can be a fun alternative to masks.

- Practice and Prepare: Talk about what to expect using pictures or videos. Try a short “pretend” trick-or-treat at home or in the garden. Use social stories or roleplay to practice greetings.

- Respect Comfort Levels: Some children may prefer watching from a safe spot, handing out treats, or joining for part of the celebration. Offer breaks or quiet zones if needed.

- Keep It Simple: Small group celebrations, familiar friends, and predictable routines reduce stress. Limit loud music or flashing lights and keep treats and activities manageable.

Celebrate With Fun Activities

Pumpkin Painting – Let your child explore colours and textures while decorating mini pumpkins or paper shapes.

Spooky Sensory Bins – Fill a bin with rice, pasta, or shredded paper and hide Halloween-themed objects for little hands to discover.

Decorating Trick-or-Treat Bags – Stickers, stamps, or simple drawings make custom bags for collecting treats.

“Magic Potions” – Use coloured water for pouring, mixing, and sensory exploration. Safe, hands-on fun!

Halloween Masks – Create simple masks with paper, elastic, and safe decorations. Encourage pretend play and creativity.
