Pro Health Care Mitcham has a dedicated Skin Check Clinic. Dr Baker and Dr Feng are our skin clinic doctors, Clinics are on Thursdays and Fridays.
The Importance of Skin Checks
While there is no national screening program for skin cancer, skin checks are an important source of early detection. Australia experiences some of the highest levels of ultra-violet radiation in the world, primarily because we are close to the equator and have weather conditions that permit many blue-sky days. It is therefore no surprise that skin cancer (combined melanoma and non-melanoma) is the most common type of cancer in Australia. Skin cancer causes more Australian deaths than transport accidents, and every year Australian GPs conduct over a million patient consultations for skin cancer.

What to Expect During Your Consult
A skin check at our dedicated skin cancer clinic is generally completed in a fifteen-minute session and is a simple, full body check for skin cancer. Doctors have on-site, specialised equipment that they use for skin checks and are equipped to undertake photographs for monitoring, biopsies, excisions, and use of cryotherapy or diathermy if required. The majority of skin cancers are able to be handled by us but we may refer to a specialist for their input if the case is complex or at the patients request.

A full body skin check at our skin check clinic costs $89.75 ($39.75 rebatable from Medicare). Additional costs may apply if a biopsy is required.

September is heart health month. Book with your GP to have a heart check done. Early intervention is important and a regular heart check takes no time at all to do. Pro Health Care Mitcham also has HeartPics here in the practice. You will need a referral to HeartPics and this can be done by your GP at the time you have your Heart Check. HeartPics offer the following services and all reporting is done by a Cardiologist.

Echocardiogram
(ECHO)
An echocardiogram is an ultrasound of your heart and it doesn’t need to be scary - it’s pretty cool actually. A probe with gel is placed onto your chest and the sonographer analyses all major cardiac structures. There is no radiation or side effects and the test provides your referring doctor with answers to important questions relating to your heart.

Electrocardiogram
(ECG)
An electrocardiogram is a recording of your heart’s electrical activity via electrodes placed at particular points on the chest. It illustrates your rhythm, rate and strength of your electrical impulse as they move through the different parts of your heart. The standardised 12 lead ECG can help diagnose many heart related conditions. This process takes approximately 5 minutes.

Event monitor
(Heartbug)
Despite its cute name it's a small patient activated event monitor (the size of a 50 cent piece) that can be used for 1-4 weeks. It allows patients with intermittent symptoms to be able to capture an ECG at the exact time of your symptom. This is then analysed and a report generated for the referring doctor.

Raising Awareness About Kidney Disease

The body has two kidneys which primarily act as a filter for the blood. The kidneys remove waste and excess water. Excess water is then stored in the bladder before being passed out of the body as urine through the urethra. The kidneys help regulate and balance the levels of minerals such as calcium, sodium, and potassium in the blood. The kidneys also produce hormones including renin, which controls blood volume and blood pressure.

Kidney disease can be a serious condition in which the kidney loses part or all of its function. Kidney dysfunction can lead to a build up of waste water which remains in the body. A consequence of kidney disease can include high blood pressure, bone disease, anemia, acidosis and cholesterol problems. Left untreated, kidney disease can be fatal.

Kidney disease can be acute or chronic. Acute kidney disease has a sudden onset whilst chronic kidney disease develops over time. The prognosis for acute kidney disease is often good as acute kidney failure can be reversible. However, there is no cure for chronic kidney disease. As the disease progresses, treatment may require dialysis or a transplant.

Risk Factors Of Kidney Disease
Age - people over 50 years of age are more likely to get kidney disease.
Obesity - obese people are a higher risk (try our BMI Calculator to see if you are obese).
Smoking
High blood pressure
Diabetes
Family history of kidney disease.
People of an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander origin.
People with kidney disease may experience no symptoms when kidney function is above 10%. Therefore it is vital that people have a health check and are screened for kidney disease. A health check for kidney disease usually includes blood pressure, blood and urine tests.
