We need to actively facilitate the wellbeing of our neurodivergent kiddos. We canβt just keep doing what weβve been doing and hope that the outcomes for this group of people will be somehow better.
The four base blocks are a big part of what we have been missing.
Many Autistic and ADHD kids simply donβt have those blocks in their tower. We need them to be there.
By strengths, I mean that the child knows what they are good at, and they have these skills and traits recognised by others (in other words, staying far away from a deficits model). A positive identity means that the person knows about their neurodivergent brain, and understands that it is different but not less. Support network refers to family or friends who offer love, empathy, connection, joy, and radical acceptance. And safety and health refers to the child feeling safe to be themselves, as well as speak up and self-advocate.
The next level of blocks (blues) is talking regulation. This is so, so important for our neurodivergent kids. Without regulation, they are unable to stack up any of their executive function skills (purple). And without those purple ones, they are unable to demonstrate the behaviour, skills development, and academic achievement that many adults expect from them.
Unfortunately, many adults (particularly in schools) focus big-time on the top few things without recognising that the blocks needed to hold these things up are missing, or have fallen down.
A dysregulated person canβt access their purple executive function skills, so they canβt operate in a classroom effectively. A person who feels unsafe in an environment cannot access their skills for good learning.
If you have a child who you have concerns for regarding those top few things (behaviour, skills, academics)- consider what the rest of their tower looks like. And work to build it up.
What do you think?
