A major milestone in robotic joint replacement at St Andrew’s Hospital
Yesterday we had the privilege of filming Dr Rob Fassina’s 2000th MAKO robotic joint replacement, a remarkable achievement that reflects more than a decade of innovation, dedication and patient-centred care.
Dr Fassina has been a pioneer of robotic arthroplasty in South Australia, introducing the first MAKO system in the state in 2015. Since then, he has helped shape the evolution of this technology, both locally and internationally, and played a pivotal role in teaching and proctoring other orthopaedic surgeons in MAKO robotics techniques.
At the heart of this milestone is Irene, the patient who generously shared in the celebrations. Living with severe knee arthritis, Irene is hopeful for less pain, a faster recovery and a return to everyday activities, a powerful reminder of why this technology, and the people behind it, matter so much.
MAKO technology allows surgeons to tailor joint replacements to each patient’s unique anatomy, supporting quicker mobility, improved function and a faster return to independence.
A huge thank you to the incredible theatre, nursing and clinical teams at St Andrew’s Hospital. Milestones like this are never achieved alone. And thank you to Irene for being part of such a special moment
Here’s to 2,000 cases and the many lives improved along the way.
