Allow yourself time to heal. It can be easy to start shaming yourself for not being “better” yet. But remember everyone is on their own journey and we can not compare ourselves.

One step at a time.

5 things I think we should all give up in the new year 🗓

1. The need for control - we can’t always control everything in the world. Sometimes we need to take a breathe and focus on what we can do right now.

2. Fearing change - change can be scary and we can resist it but many times the best things come out of change. If things all stayed the same we would see no progress.

3. Gossiping about others - gossip is one of the worst habits. When we gossip about others we increase our own insecurities. It makes us worry more about what others think about us. If you have a “friend” who gossips too much then it might be time to leave that friend behind as you enter the new year.

4. Living in shame - you are not dirty or bad. Stop shaming yourself for being human and/or making mistake.

5. Ableist and stigmatised views - in 2022 let’s all agree to pick ourselves up on our ableist and stigmatised views and actions. Even the ones we have about ourselves.

I have had some interesting conversations around how trying to fight the anxiety away can make us more anxious.

Have you experienced this? 💬

Would love to hear everyone’s tips for letting go of the need to end anxiety all together.

I’m currently doing my Personality Psychology course and it has provoked many thoughts for me around what personality is.

I went to a meeting this week that was all about education policy for young people and children.

It was a room full of what appear to be educated, neurotypical, majority white, majority 40 years plus.

And they were discussing and deciding what was best for struggling children. All I could think was “why don’t we just ask the children”.

I am very passionate about this and want to see this change.

Well laws and policy effect children we should consult children!

But this also goes for our personal life. We need to treat children like HUMANS! Because they are. They deserve choices (within reason/safety).

We still have a problem with parents thinking their teens will “grow out of it”

But these findings suggest that what parents are perceiving as “a phase” might actually been to early symptoms of mental illness.

We also have reluctantly from professionals when it comes to diagnosis for teens. Many professionals have good reason for being reluctant to diagnose teens but I wonder if we should stop being reluctant to diagnose?

Imagine if your GP was reluctant to diagnose you with cancer? So instead of diagnosing just taught you to eat healthier.

I know this is not exactly the same but some food for thought.

Would love to hear your opinions in the comments. Maybe you think professionals diagnose too much?

I used to HATE when people talked to me about breathing techniques.

It never worked for me and I was sure it made my anxiety worse.

But something changed and was able to focus on my breath without “freaking out”.

I have now learnt to use my breath to put myself in a calm focused state.

I think using the AWARE technique has also helped because I now notice the signs/triggers of becoming anxious earlier than I did before.

Our mental health is made up of some many factors and no one thing will fix it everything over night. But when you start to be able to look back and see the change, you will be so proud of yourself.

Have you reached that stage yet? Try writing your goals down so you can reflect back next year.

Schema therapy is a newer type of therapy that combines elements of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), psychoanalysis, attachment theory, and emotion-focused therapy, among others.

For me, schema therapy has been the therapy that made sense.

It taught me about how my past experiences impacted my behaviours but also showed me that I am in control and can’t stop the maladaptive behaviours.

I have learnt so much about myself over the past year in schema therapy. So happy to look back and see such an improvement.

Was there a therapy that seemed to work better than others for you? 💬👇
