In the TCM rooms, we’ve got plenty of tricks up our sleeve that don’t involve needles. One of those? The humble little soup spoon 🍲✨

Gua sha is a traditional technique often used as an alternative or alongside cupping. “Gua” means to scrape, and “sha” refers to the temporary redness that rises on the skin.

Using a smooth-edged tool (yes, even a ceramic soup spoon from the drawer will do), we gently stroke the skin to encourage movement and circulation. Much like cupping, gua sha creates surface marks that show up differently depending on what’s happening underneath.

You might have seen gua sha trending as a beauty ritual - and yes, it can be done with a beautiful stone tool. But in clinic, it’s most often applied to the neck + shoulders for tension, or during cold + flu season to help the body “expel” what it doesn’t need to hold onto.

The marks can look a little dramatic - but once you understand them, they feel a lot less intimidating (some of you even look forward to them!).
