At Peter Elberg Funerals, respecting all culturesbegins with understanding. You might notice Greek Easter falls on a different date, but occassionaly they do match up as was the case in 2025 and will next occur in 2028. The reason? Western churches follow theGregorian calendar, while Orthodox churches follow the older Julian calendar.Greek Easter is often more ceremonial, with rituals, symbolism, and strong cultural connectionsbringing people together. Different dates. Different traditions. But the same reason to pause, reflect, and be with those who matter the most. Happy Easter. Respecting all cultures.

At Peter Elberg Funerals, respecting all culturesbegins with understanding. For many, Easter isn’t a long weekend. It’s a journey. It begins with Lent-40 days of quiet reflection, sacrifice and preparation. Its a season that reminds us that meaning is often found not in what we gain, but in what we let go.In the lead up to Easter the colour purple-rich, deep, deliberate-has long symbolised both mourning and royalty. But it also carries something else: Dignity. Honour. The promise of what’s to come. Because Easter is not only about grief. It’s about resurrection. Renewal. Hope rising. At Peter Elberg Funerals, we recognise that for many families, these moments-these meanings-matter deeply. Happy Easter.

Today, March 21, is Harmony Day. At Peter Elberg Funerals, respecting all cultures starts with understanding-and today, we pay homage to Harmony Day (21 March 2026). A celebration of Australia’s rich cultural tapestry, Harmony Day is all about inclusiveness, respect, and belonging-from the traditional custodians of this land to the countless communities who’ve made Australia home. The official colour is orange, a symbol of
communication and respect-values at the heart of everything we do.

Five years ago, for International Women’s Day, our first post recognised a remarkable local woman-Natasha Stott Despoja.

Since then, there’s been plenty of water under the bridge, and Natasha’s work and influence have continued to grow. So this year, we thought it was the perfect moment to revisit her story and share an update on what she has been achieving in the years since.

As always, we’re proud to acknowledge inspiring people connected to Adelaide’s western suburbs-individuals whose dedication, leadership and service continue to make a difference in our community.

Natasha Stott Despoja AO is a former Australian politician, diplomat, gender equality advocate and author.

Natasha was a federal Senator for South Australia (1995-2008), a political party leader, Ambassador and Royal Commissioner. She recently completed her role as a Professor in the Practice of Politics at ANU.

This Sunday, March 8, is International Women’s Day. Observed for over 100 years, since 1911, it’s a moment to recognise and celebrate the social, cultural and political achievements of women around the world. You’ll often see the colour purple associated with International Women’s Day. Historically, purple represents justice and dignity - values that continue to guide the movement today. At Peter Elberg Funerals, we pause to acknowledge the women who shape our lives and communities every day - the mothers, daughters, sisters, partners, friends and colleagues whose strength, compassion and quiet leadership leave a lasting legacy.

To our incredible team—thank you for the tireless effort, the care you bring to your work, and the way you show up for each other every day. We appreciate you more than words (or baked goods) can say. As a small token of our thanks… please enjoy a cookie.

At Peter Elberg Funerals, respecting all cultures begins with understanding.Ramadan is one of the holiest times in the Islamic calendar. For Muslims around the world, it is asacred month of reflection, devotion and connection.During Ramadan, adult Muslims, who are able, fast each day from dawn (fajr) until sunset (maghrib). Fasting is an act of worship and self-discipline, but the month is about so much more. It is a time for prayer, generosity, reading the Qur’an, and strengthening bonds within family and community.Ramadan begins with the sighting of the crescent moon-February 18, 2026- and lasts 29 or 30 days, following the lunar cycle.By learning about important occasions like Ramadan, we deepen our understanding of the diverse cultures that make up our community — and continue our commitment to respecting all cultures.

Meet Alan Young

In Adelaide we’re not immune to the destruction of beaches that is occurring around the world. Walk along Henley and West Beaches on any day and you’ll witness the erosion that plagues these State treasures. If ever our beaches needed friends, it’s today!

Meet Alan Young, a friend the beaches in the true definition of the word.

Alan who grew up out in the bush developed a love for the beach due to a phobia of the water that he developed after nearly drowning. He took up sailing to tackle his fear and has now passed on his love of sailing and the water to his children and grandchildren. His grand daughter is currently building her own boat that she plans to row down the Murray from Mildura to Goolwa.

Alan and his team of volunteers has been working tirelessly for a number of years, restoring vegetation to the sand dunes around West Beach. A great example of their dedicated work is Lot 101 (dunes located west of the Glenelg Sewage plant).

Alan began the West Beach Coastal Newsletter a number of years ago as an information journal to raise awareness, keeping people up to date with the health of our beaches. His goal is to have 2,000 people receiving his newsletter by the end of 2024. It’s a way to educate the public and show the Government that the plight of our beach has to be a priority.

Alan is about finding a solution; not about laying blame for what’s happened to our shoreline...
“What’s done is done, Let’s work together as a community - not just the coastal community or the Adelaide community but the whole State, to help solve the problem’’ he says.
