The silly season has started....
This week is often one of our busiest of the year.... as Colleges finish, we move in to deliver First Aid and CPR to Teachers.

We have been working with large schools for years and our team is incredibly efficent at the huge behind the scenes administration that these large bookings entail.

Our Training team provides a fun and engaging learning environment for Teachers so they leave feeling first aid confident.

The last 2 days has seen us training 100 teachers i in HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and another 100 in HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in and Education and Care Setting. 1 more school to go... and this is in amongst our other Medication and Seizure courses for the week.

What a team! We appreciate you Kaitlin (you know I wouldn't cope without you), Amanda, Lenice, Derryn and Kim!!!

If your School or Organisation needs training, make sure you think of us

Entertaining loved ones is a fun way to bring everyone together, especially around this time of year.

However, if you are catering for family or friends with a food allergy, you may be feeling a little unsure of how to do your best to keep them safe and feeling comfortable .

As a mum of a son with multiple food allergies, I’d love to share my tips with you if you are catering for guests with food allergies.

1. Know and understand their food allergies

2. Discuss safe and not-safe options

3. Give them the option to bring something (often if they ask or insist it’s because they don’t want to put you out and it’s something they feel safe eating)

4. Be aware of cross contamination
• Use clean chopping boards for allergy-safe meals
• Use different utensils for allergy-safe meals
• Be conscious about the order of cooking on BBQs
• Have an allergy-safe platter or dedicated selection of meals

5. Keep all packaging and labels (they may need to read them)

6. Be aware that everyone deals with allergies differently – some may be shy or others may be ok to talk about it in front of others

As Christmas makes its way closer (which is very scary), it is time to think about the first aid hazards that raise their head around this time.

Lots of Christmas gifts can get mixed up with the craziness of Christmas morning. This means that kids can get to toys that are not suggested for their age, and little pieces can be left around.

If a child chokes, do you know what to do? Act quickly!

Using the heel of your hand:
5 sharp back blows followed by 5 sharp chest thrusts – REPEAT until dislodged, call 000 if required.

Spring is for picnics, not panic.

Do you know the signs of allergies and anaphylaxis?

Signs of mild to moderate allergic reaction
• Hives, welts or body redness
• Swelling of the face, lips, eyes
• Tingling of the mouth
• Abdominal pain and vomiting (Note: these are signs of a severe allergic reaction/anaphylaxis in someone with a severe insect allergy)

Any ONE of these signs means someone is having a severe allergic reaction – ANAPHYLAXIS
• Difficult or noisy breathing
• Swelling of the tongue
• Swelling or tightness in throat
• Wheeze or persistent cough
• Difficulty talking or hoarse voice
• Persistent dizziness or collapse
• Pale and floppy (young children)
• For INSECT ALLERGY – abdominal pain, vomiting

If in doubt call 000!

Asthma can turn up even when the professionals don’t expect it and it is always good to be prepared. Recently when I was at a netball game a change in the weather triggered an unlikely asthma attack. With high humidity and storms around the weather pressure changes made it hard to breath. There was someone who had experienced their first attack and there was also those who are known to have asthma who were struggling as well.

Do you have a puffer in your first aid kid and an Asthma action plan to help those who may be experiencing their first attack?

Have you ever thought about WHY people are allergic to nuts?

Knowing why and how can help you to understand what is happening and can save important seconds in an emergency!

With the sun shining, snakes are out. And this information is really helpful!
There are some references to VIC snakes, but the info is all still relevant.

The sun is back, and even on days where it doesn’t seem to have a bite, sun safety is so important.

Are you and your kids aware of Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek and Slide?

The time to stop cancer is before it starts.

Sunscreen is not a suit of armour and shouldn't be your only line of defence against sun damage.

Whenever the UV is 3 or above, it's important to make sure you slip, slop, slap, seek and slide.
