NEW OWNER

We wish to announce the new owner of SA Remedial Therapy Clinic and wish her all the best in her new endeavour.

The clinic will continue to be open and run as before, except with a new remedial massage therapist taking over from me. It is with great pleasure that I introduce Ying LI, a therapist that I have enormous respect and confidence in. She studied at the same college that both Theresa and I did so her draping, client care and foundations of massage will be familiar to you and a big plus for you. Of course there will be some differences too. Every massage therapist is unique, each having their own favourite techniques, but I am sure that Ying will look after you perfectly well and that there will be enough similarities for you to soon feel at home with her.

Ying’s past clients have included office workers, teachers, aged care and disability workers, pensioners and other health care professionals. She also has a history of working within the disability support system and her powers of remedial massage therapy have greatly benefited her clients through their physical comfort, pain relief and improvement in range of motion.

Her list of post-graduate certificates and qualifications is very impressive (more extensive than mine!) which just shows her passion for the massage industry.

I sincerely trust that you will give her a go and make her feel welcome.

Retirement.
Well, the time has come. After more than 23 years of practice, I (Rob) am retiring from massage and giving my hands a well-earned rest. My plan is to do lots of travel, more camping and bushwalking, getting stuck into projects around home, and enjoy more time with my family and grandchildren.
This is a decision that I have been considering for several years and I feel that now is the time to make the change.
I will miss the interactions that I have had with all of my clients and I sincerely want to thank you for your support over the years. The opportunity to meet you, and provide you with what I hope has been of some help, has really meant a lot to me. Thank you all.
My last day is Friday the 21st July 2023.
Theresa is retiring from her teaching role at the massage college, but she has decided that she wants to continue with her corporate massage engagements.
As much as this is a big step for both of us, it is also a very positive and exciting change.
Thank you all once again.
Warm regards,
Rob and Theresa

Just letting you know that it is business as normal here, at SA Remedial Therapy Clinic, even though Gawler Place is partially blocked off. Enter our building via the main doors, as usual, after negotiating the temporary scaffolding. One of the large panels on the facade of the building next door to us fell off in the wind last week (luckily nobody was hurt) and they are now sorting it out.

Muscles and Winter.
It is natural for us to succumb to some degree of hibernation during the winter months. After all, it is cold, wet and windy outside and who wouldn’t rather be curled up in front of a warm fire reading a good book. We tend to be less active when the shorter daylight hours and longer nights close in on us, and in some cases we can even get a case of the winter ‘blues’.
Inactivity can leave your muscles feeling tired, weak, stiff and sore and your joints start to ache more. Muscles conserve heat when it is cold by contracting, which can constrict blood flow, thus delivering less oxygen and less nutrients to our muscles. Lack of movement also results in a reduction in our lymph flow, possibly leaving us more susceptible to colds and other viruses. The lymph system is, in part, responsible for moving white blood cells around the body that help to fight against disease.
The solution to these winter blues is to be as active as possible both indoors and outside, weather permitting! Exercise helps to warm the muscle tissue, lengthens muscles, improves blood flow and improves lymph flow. Joints become less stiff. Exercise also produces feel-good hormones which improves your mental wellness.
If you do manage to get outside for some exercise be aware that your muscles will take longer to warm up and it could also be harder to keep them warm. You might be more susceptible to injury if you exercise with stiff and cold muscles, so take the extra time to warm-up adequately for your specific type of exercise. Make sure that you stay well hydrated too, even though you might not feel thirsty when it is cold.
Massage should be considered as part of your winter routine. Massage warms up muscles and tendons, helps loosen tight muscles, relieves soreness and gets muscles ready for exercise. It increases blood circulation and assists the lymphatic system. Serotonin and dopamine, the feel good hormones, are released during massage so we even feel better! And, if you need any further reason to get a massage, we can even apply oil to your winter-dried-out skin!
I hope that you can manage to keep those winter blues at bay.
Take care.

Women and Musculoskeletal Disease.

I found this article interesting, and it might partly explain why we see more women than men at our clinic.
The Massage & Myotherapy Australia Fact Sheet 1 on Women and Musculoskeletal Disease, updated 7th Dec 2021, reports that according to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare 2018 more women than men experience osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and other musculoskeletal conditions.
Women also seek massage treatments at a ratio of 2:1 to men.
The report goes on to say that evidence based research has shown that massage, while not being a cure for musculoskeletal disease, is effective in relieving the symptoms of pain, improving reduced motion and reducing pain associated with these conditions.
It concludes with the statement that “Massage was most effective when combined with education and exercise and when administered by a licenced therapist”.

Saw this on the Choice page and liked how they gave massage a plug. 😷
It is a timely reminder, though, to check when your cover resets. In their words "Use it or lose it".😭

Your extras benefits will probably reset on 1 January, so now's the time to get those new specs, a dental check-up or massage to ensure you're getting value for your cover.
