Today, February 2 2025, marks Physical Disability Awareness Day π©βπ¦½π
Established in 2023 after seeing a gap in the awareness calendar for highlighting physical disabilities, this day brings attention to people living with physical disability, their contributions and the many conditions that fall under the physical disability umbrella.
π£ Experience the first-hand perspective of physically disabled cabaret performer and producer, burlesque artist and performing artist, as well as Access2Arts Access Coordinator, Jacqui Tedmanson (AKA Diana Divine):
"In the decade that Iβve been an independent performing artist, Iβve seen fantastic developments in access β but during this time, Iβve also had to fight for my place in the industry. I have seen more than a few disabled artists give up on their performing careers due to inaccessibility fatigue."
"In the entertainment sphere we are so focused on the audience experience, that often the artistsβ needs are lost. If disabled performers are not on stages, then authentic disabled stories are not being told, then we are either misrepresented or erased altogether."
"Disabled people are creative β we have to be to navigate a world not built for us. We are funny, engaging, and do we have some stories to tell!"
If you would like to make your events or venues more accessible to both physically disabled attendees and performers, get in contact with us through the link in our bio.
