NRF - NeuroSurgical Research Foundation

Neuroscience researchers are looking for ways to improve treatments which can save lives of children and adults living with these neurosurgical and neurological conditions.

-Brain Tumours - how cancer invades the brain
-Spinal Cord Injury - as a result of sporting or car accidents
-Traumatic Brain Injury - how to halt life threatening brain swelling
-Concussion - how to stop the neurodegeneration in head trauma caused by concussion
-Sudden Infant Death Syndrome - understanding the risk of head trauma in vulnerable juveniles
-Paediatric Research - identifying trends leading to improving treatment outcomes
-Mobile Phones - researching the effects of mobile phone irradiation on the brain
-Stroke, brain haemorrhage and aneurysms - developing surgical treatments
-Parkinson's Disease - slowing down the progression of this condition

Looking for cures, improved treatments and developing drugs which are progressing from the laboratory to clinical trials, resulting in better outcomes for patients.

What a day on the green! โ›ณ๐Ÿ’š

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us for the NRF Golf Day at Mount Lofty Golf Club, supporting Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) research.

From the laughs on the fairway to the fierce putting competition, raffle wins, and a few memorable moments (including a quick rescue for an unlucky magpie ๐Ÿฆ), today was all about community and compassion.

A special thank you to NRF Ambassador Tyler Fuller who once again poured his heart into hosting this incredible fundraiser โ€” just a week after running a Bunnings Sausage Sizzle for the same cause! Tylerโ€™s passion and resilience as a TBI survivor inspire us all. ๐Ÿ’š

Congratulations to our winning team, who scored an impressive 35, and to all our raffle and silent auction winners! A big thank you to all our wonderful prize donors for helping make today possible.

Every ticket, swing, and donation today helps fund vital TBI research โ€” supporting scientists and clinicians working to improve recovery and outcomes for people affected by brain injury.

The NRF proudly supports clinician-researchers who are driving innovation to improve patient outcomes.

Meet Dr Nicholas Candy, neurosurgical accredited registrar, whose work is funded through the Abbie Simpson Clinical Fellowship. Combining his clinical training with a PhD, Dr Candy is focused on improving outcomes for patients undergoing endoscopic pituitary surgery.

In our latest feature, Dr Candy shares what inspired his journey as a surgeon-scientist, insights from his research, and the impact of NRF support on his work.

Honouring John "Griff" Griffenโ€™s legacy through brain cancer research ๐Ÿ’›

Today, Caitie, Jaimi and the Griff family visited the Brain Cancer Research Labs at the Centre for Cancer Biology to see firsthand the impact of their incredible fundraising efforts.

Thanks to the $43,000 raised in memory of their beloved dad, Griff, the family is helping fund groundbreaking research led by Dr Chloe Shard. Her project is focused on finding new ways to overcome treatment resistance in glioblastoma โ€” one of the most aggressive forms of brain cancer.

The research team is studying how certain cells within a tumourโ€™s ecosystem can suppress the immune system and help cancer cells survive treatment. By disrupting these interactions and developing next-generation immune therapies, they aim to create new treatment approaches that are more effective against glioblastoma.

๐Ÿง  "We're beyond grateful for the opportunity to tour the cancer research facility and meet the incredible team working hard to change the brain cancer narrative. It was absolutely inspiring to see firsthand how the funds raised from Dad's Glioblastoma fundraising day were being used. We know he'll be smiling down with amazement. Dads legacy of giving hope, coming together, and making change continues through this groundbreaking research".

From all of us at the NRF โ€” thank you for honouring Griff in such a meaningful and impactful way. Your generosity is helping drive discoveries that could one day transform how this disease is treated.

A sea of shoes lined the lawns of Parliament House last week, each pair representing an Australian life taken too soon by brain cancer. ๐Ÿ‘Ÿ

Behind every pair lies a story of love, loss, courage, and an urgent call for change.

Every year, 1,896 Australians are diagnosed with brain cancer, and heartbreakingly, 1,526 lose their lives. These arenโ€™t just numbers; theyโ€™re families, friends, and futures cut short.

At this yearโ€™s Head to the Hill event, organised by Brain Tumour Alliance Australia (BTAA), advocates from across the country came together to call on our leaders to increase funding for vital research and support.

More research means more time. More answers. More hope ๐Ÿ’›

We believe in a future where survival is the norm, not the exception. For all those impacted by this insidious disease, we stand with you.

Did you know that even after aggressive treatment, glioblastoma almost always recurs, with tumour cells connecting to neurons to survive.

Now thatโ€™s scary!

Thanks to NRF-funded research, like Dr Olivia Morris Hanonโ€™s work and our scholarships supporting future leaders, weโ€™re making an impact in understanding and treating brain tumours. ๐Ÿ’›

Today on World Stroke Day, weโ€™re celebrating the incredible research helping to improve outcomes and treatment for people affected by stroke. ๐Ÿง  ๐Ÿ’›

What does the future of stroke care look like?

Thanks to your support, brilliant early-career researchers are exploring new ways to understand, prevent, and treat stroke.

Our NRF-supported students showcased their stroke research to peers, academics, and industry leaders at the recent Florey Undergraduate Research Conference โ€” driving forward discoveries that could change lives.
