NRF - NeuroSurgical Research Foundation

Neuroscience researchers are looking for ways to improve treatments which can save lives of children and adults living with these neurosurgical and neurological conditions.

-Brain Tumours - how cancer invades the brain
-Spinal Cord Injury - as a result of sporting or car accidents
-Traumatic Brain Injury - how to halt life threatening brain swelling
-Concussion - how to stop the neurodegeneration in head trauma caused by concussion
-Sudden Infant Death Syndrome - understanding the risk of head trauma in vulnerable juveniles
-Paediatric Research - identifying trends leading to improving treatment outcomes
-Mobile Phones - researching the effects of mobile phone irradiation on the brain
-Stroke, brain haemorrhage and aneurysms - developing surgical treatments
-Parkinson's Disease - slowing down the progression of this condition

Looking for cures, improved treatments and developing drugs which are progressing from the laboratory to clinical trials, resulting in better outcomes for patients.

April is Parkinson’s Awareness Month 💜

Parkinson’s is the fastest-growing neurological condition in the world, affecting around 10 million people globally and more than 150,000 Australians.

While many people recognise symptoms like tremor and slowed movement, Parkinson’s can also cause non-motor symptoms such as sleep difficulties, fatigue, and changes in mood or thinking that can greatly affect quality of life.

Researchers in Adelaide have uncovered a hidden driver of glioblastoma — the most aggressive form of brain cancer.

The discovery reveals how a protein called CD47 helps tumours grow, move and invade surrounding tissues by protecting another protein called ROBO2.

“By understanding this mechanism, we now have new targets to explore.” Dr Robinson explained. “The plan for us is can we develop therapies that can specifically inhibit or block the function of ROBO2.”

This breakthrough was a truly collaborative effort involving multiple research teams at the Centre for Cancer Biology, led by Dr Nirmal Robinson and Dr Ruhi Polara, whose work was supported by the NeuroSurgical Research Foundation and its community of donors.

Your support powers discoveries like this — helping us move closer to better treatments.

Brain injuries are complex - and time matters.

This research, supported by NRF, is exploring how AI can help clinicians read CT scans faster and more accurately, leading to better, more informed decisions for patients.

Proud to support work that’s making a real difference.

Help us spread brain tumour awareness this Grey May 🧠

We’re looking for volunteers this May to help out at our community stands across Adelaide. If you have a few hours to spare between 10am–3pm, Monday–Friday, we’d love to hear from you.

You’ll be helping connect with the community, raise awareness about brain tumours, and support fundraising for vital brain tumour research.

✔ Meet new people and represent a local charity
✔ Raise awareness about brain tumours
✔ Help fund life-changing research

All volunteers are fully supported and will work in teams of at least two. You can nominate the days and times that suit your availability.

100% of donations we receive go directly to research, and we are the largest funder of brain tumour research in South Australia.

If you’re interested in helping this Grey May, please get in touch:

More than 6,000 Australians were hospitalised after falling on or from ladders in 2023-24 🪜

Doctors are urging extra caution when using ladders, particularly for older Australians, as balance, strength, and reaction time can decline with age.

Taking simple precautions can help reduce the risk of serious injuries.

In 2018, Lauren Roffey’s life changed in an instant when she sustained a traumatic brain injury after an accidental fall while helping a student at work.

What followed was a long and challenging recovery journey. Today, Lauren uses her experience to raise awareness, advocate for greater understanding of brain injury, and support others navigating similar challenges.

Lauren is also the founder of theorangebutterfly_, a South Australian organisation supporting people living with concussion and brain injury through community, education, and advocacy.

She also hosts a monthly brain injury support group in the Adelaide Botanic Gardens, held on the last Saturday of each month.

Dr Jorn Van Der Veken has received a $75,000 research grant to investigate the neuropsychological outcomes after elective treatment of anterior communicating artery aneurysms.

Intracranial aneurysms occur in about 2-3% of the population, yet the impact of preventative treatments on cognition remains inadequately studied.

This research aims to better understand these outcomes and help improve patient selection, informed consent, and treatment outcomes.

As part of Brain Awareness Week, Dr Van Der Veken will also present a free webinar on Wednesday 18 March through The Brain Foundation.

Can mega-dose Vitamin C help treat brain swelling?

Encouraging early results from NRF-supported research suggest it might.

Researchers Dr Aniket Nadkarni and Associate Professor Mark Plummer have been investigating a new treatment using sodium ascorbate, a salty formulation of Vitamin C, to reduce pressure in the brain after traumatic brain injury.

Early findings from pre-clinical models show the treatment can reduce brain pressure while avoiding harmful increases in blood salts - paving the way for a first-phase clinical trial at the Royal Adelaide Hospital.

If successful, this research could lead to the first treatment that both reduces swelling and helps protect brain cells from further damage.

Your support is helping bring discoveries like this closer to patients.
