NRF - NeuroSurgical Research Foundation

Neuroscience researchers are looking for ways to improve treatments which can save lives of children and adults living with these neurosurgical and neurological conditions.

-Brain Tumours - how cancer invades the brain
-Spinal Cord Injury - as a result of sporting or car accidents
-Traumatic Brain Injury - how to halt life threatening brain swelling
-Co

ncussion - how to stop the neurodegeneration in head trauma caused by concussion
-Sudden Infant Death Syndrome - understanding the risk of head trauma in vulnerable juveniles
-Paediatric Research - identifying trends leading to improving treatment outcomes
-Mobile Phones - researching the effects of mobile phone irradiation on the brain
-Stroke, brain haemorrhage and aneurysms - developing surgical treatments
-Parkinson's Disease - slowing down the progression of this condition

Looking for cures, improved treatments and developing drugs which are progressing from the laboratory to clinical trials, resulting in better outcomes for patients.

New research is reshaping how we understand Parkinson’s disease!

In one of the largest studies of its kind, researchers in Australia found that symptoms, risk factors, and progression can differ between men and women - highlighting the need for more personalised approaches to care.

Proud to see A/Prof Lyndsey Collins-Praino commenting on this important study in a recent article in The Conversation.

Parkinson’s disease is often diagnosed too late - when symptoms have already progressed.

This NRF-supported research is exploring a promising biomarker to better understand and predict Parkinson’s risk in people with a history of traumatic brain injury.

By identifying risk earlier, this work could support more timely diagnosis and more targeted care.

GG is Running for Glioblastoma Research - Friday 15 May 2026 🧠💛🏃‍♂️

Associate Professor Guillermo “GG” Gomez is taking on the No Time To Die Frontyard Ultra, a gruelling endurance challenge in Victoria Parklands, to raise vital funds for glioblastoma research and clinical trials.

Last year, GG ran 242 km from Barmera to Glenelg, honouring every South Australian diagnosed with brain cancer and raising awareness for this aggressive disease. Now he is pushing his limits again and you can support him.

This World Parkinson’s Day, we’re helping raise awareness of Parkinson’s disease - a progressive neurological condition that affects movement, coordination, and balance 🧠💜

PD is the fastest growing neurological condition worldwide. While often thought of as a motor disease, non-motor symptoms also widely occur in Parkinson's Disease, even prior to the onset of motor symptoms. These are a major predictor of quality of life for those with PD and their loved ones.

Despite this, they are often under-reported and treatment options are lacking. Improving understanding of non-motor symptoms in PD is an important step toward enhanced recognition and better outcomes.

Parkinson’s Word Search! 🧠🧩

Can you find all the hidden words?
Look for Tremor, Awareness, Parkinson, and Neuron.

Parkinson’s affects more than 150,000 Australians, and early signs can include tremor, stiffness, slowed movement, and balance difficulties. But the condition can also cause less visible symptoms like sleep disruption, fatigue, and mood or cognitive changes.

April is Parkinson’s Awareness Month - a chance to learn more about the condition and support the people living with it every day.

Challenge yourself, share with friends, and help shine a light on Parkinson’s!

April is Parkinson’s Awareness Month 💜

Parkinson’s is the fastest-growing neurological condition in the world, affecting around 10 million people globally and more than 150,000 Australians.

While many people recognise symptoms like tremor and slowed movement, Parkinson’s can also cause non-motor symptoms such as sleep difficulties, fatigue, and changes in mood or thinking that can greatly affect quality of life.

Researchers in Adelaide have uncovered a hidden driver of glioblastoma — the most aggressive form of brain cancer.

The discovery reveals how a protein called CD47 helps tumours grow, move and invade surrounding tissues by protecting another protein called ROBO2.

“By understanding this mechanism, we now have new targets to explore.” Dr Robinson explained. “The plan for us is can we develop therapies that can specifically inhibit or block the function of ROBO2.”

This breakthrough was a truly collaborative effort involving multiple research teams at the Centre for Cancer Biology, led by Dr Nirmal Robinson and Dr Ruhi Polara, whose work was supported by the NeuroSurgical Research Foundation and its community of donors.

Your support powers discoveries like this — helping us move closer to better treatments.

Help us spread brain tumour awareness this Grey May 🧠

We’re looking for volunteers this May to help out at our community stands across Adelaide. If you have a few hours to spare between 10am–3pm, Monday–Friday, we’d love to hear from you.

You’ll be helping connect with the community, raise awareness about brain tumours, and support fundraising for vital brain tumour research.

✔ Meet new people and represent a local charity
✔ Raise awareness about brain tumours
✔ Help fund life-changing research

All volunteers are fully supported and will work in teams of at least two. You can nominate the days and times that suit your availability.

100% of donations we receive go directly to research, and we are the largest funder of brain tumour research in South Australia.

If you’re interested in helping this Grey May, please get in touch:
