đź’ˇNew Publication: Confronting the Ethical Issues with Artificial Intelligence Use in Nephrology

Navigating the Ethical Frontier of AI in Nephrology

Artificial Intelligence is reshaping what’s possible in kidney care, from transplant allocation to remote dialysis monitoring and chronic kidney disease management. But as the technology evolves, so too must our ethical frameworks.

A recent Kidney360 article highlights several crucial considerations for clinicians, researchers, and health systems as AI becomes more embedded in nephrology practice.

Introduction to Recording Paternal Parenthood Events in Dialysis and Transplant Recipients

Dialysis has important impact on fertility for men and women. A kidney transplant can give people their lives back returning to work, study, and family. For many men of reproductive age, it also brings renewed hope of becoming an active, present father. Yet 80% say their clinicians never discuss fertility, sexuality, or parenthood, leaving some to believe that having children is no longer possible with dialysis or after transplant.

This silence exists because there’s still limited information about how dialysis, transplants and anti‑rejection medications affect pregnancies fathered by people with kidney failure. Even though the ANZDATA Registry is one of the world’s key sources of this knowledge, our data reporting on male parenthood is declining.

We’re asking for your help to change that. By sharing your information, you can help fill this gap and give men the clarity and confidence they deserve.

Kidney Replacement Therapy Within 12 Months of Childbirth in Australia
Authors: Sadia Jahan, Christopher Davies, Yu-Tyan Chen, Elizabeth Sullivan, Shilpa Jesudason, Erandi Hewawasam

🔍 What the study explored
Using linked perinatal, hospital, and ANZDATA registry records across four Australian jurisdictions, the research team analysed the characteristics and long‑term outcomes of women who commenced KRT after childbirth, including women who started within the first postpartum year.

Click link for more information:

Pregnancy may unmask or worsen kidney disease, in some cases leading to postnatal kidney failure. Outcomes in these women remain poorly defined.

📢 New Research Published!
Title: “Trends in Peritoneal Dialysis Demographics, Peritonitis and HD Transfer in Australia from 2013–2022”, is now available in Journal of Vascular Access via SAGE.
Authors: Jarrad Hopkins, Annie Conway, David Johnson, Monique Borlace, Neil Boudville, Melinda Tomlins, Katrina Chau, Jenny Chen and Stephen McDonald AM

🔍 Key Insights:
· PD utilisation in Australia has declined over the past decade, despite improvements in peritonitis rates and peritonitis-associated HD transfer.
· The demographic profile of PD patients has remained stable, suggesting systemic rather than patient-level factors are driving these trends.
The disconnect between infection control improvements and overall HD transfer highlights the growing importance of non-infective contributors such as access, psychosocial factors, and clinical support.
