📢 Expressions of Interest: Advanced Trainee Research Project Program (ATRPP) 2026
The ANZSN/ANZDATA Advanced Trainee Research Project Program (ATRPP) is the signature research training initiative designed to help Nephrology Advanced Trainees build research and statistical skills. Using data from the ANZDATA Registry, the program supports trainees in designing, analysing, and completing high-quality research projects.

This is a collaborative program delivered in partnership by Australian and New Zealand Society of Nephrology (ANZSN) and Australia and New Zealand Dialysis and Transplant Registry (ANZDATA). It strengthens registry quality assurance activities and aligns with the Australia and New Zealand Society of Nephrology (ANZSN)’s pillars of research, education, and advocacy.
Program Highlights:
âś…Trainees will be expected to attend meetings with their fellow trainees enrolled in the program approximately weekly-fortnightly.
âś…They will be expected to discuss progress updates regularly with the Epidemiology Fellow and present their project updates at the ANZDATA Research meeting bi-annually.
âś…Trainees may additionally have the opportunity to present their work at the ANZSN Annual Scientific Meeting.
While projects must be led by a Trainee, it is desirable Trainees have one or more supervisors for the project locally. Trainees and/or their local supervisors should have a research idea or an area of interest. ANZDATA and the ANZSN-ANZDATA Clinical Epidemiology Fellow can assist in developing and refining a suitable research project that uses data from the ANZDATA Registry in conjunction with the trainee.
Who should apply?
Preference will be given to:
• Trainees earlier in RACP Nephrology Advanced Training (1st or 2nd year Advanced Training) with the aim of completing the research project for submission to fulfil training requirements
• Trainees based at hospitals/institutions without local statistical or research support (See Policy 2.8: Guidance on statistical support for external researchers)
📌 EOI's for 2026 will close:
Friday, March 6th, 2026 at 5:00 pm ACST
For more information contact: Dana Forcey, dana2@anzdata.org.au
For EOI submission email: anzdata@anzdata.org.au

📢 New Publication Alert
Title: Frequency of therapy alerts during the first 30 days of automated peritoneal dialysis and its relationship to time on treatment

Authors: Annie Conway, Jarrad Hopkins, Michelle Ovenden, Monique Borlace, David Johnson, Jenny Chen, Kamal Sud, Neil Boudville and Stephen McDonald AM

đź’ˇ Could early alerts predict dialysis outcomes?
Early therapy alerts during automated peritoneal dialysis (APD) matter. Using linked data from Australia and New Zealand Dialysis and Transplant Registry (ANZDATA) and Vantive’s Sharesource platform, our research shows that a higher alert burden in the first 30 days is linked to increased risk of hemodialysis transfer within 12 months.

âś… Key takeaway: Addressing alerts early could help improve PD continuation and patient outcomes.

Celebrating the Inaugural Indigenous Datathon
On October 11–12, Australia and New Zealand Dialysis and Transplant Registry (ANZDATA) proudly partnered in the first-ever Indigenous Datathon at QUT Brisbane, hosted by the Indigenous Data Network. This was an inspiring event that brought together clinicians, data scientists, policy experts, and Indigenous leaders to explore ethical, impactful uses of health data.
Mentors from across disciplines supported the teams, including Christopher Davies and Dana Forcey from ANZDATA, who brought valuable expertise in clinical registry interpretation and Indigenous data governance.
Guided by the CARE Principles for Indigenous Data Governance, teams worked with de-identified ICU and renal datasets which included a first of its kind linked dataset from ANZICS and ANZDATA which to address real world health challenges and proposed community led solutions.

This event set a new benchmark for collaboration, cultural respect, and innovation in clinical research. We’re excited to continue building on this momentum to support Indigenous health equity and data sovereignty.
