Wise words shared from Dr Ian Zajac our Research Fellow in men’s su***de prevention.
Thanks to everyone who joined our Men's Meals and Mental Health Dinners in 2024, and 2025 and the vital support Preventive Health SA this research position was made possible.
This year, we're aiming even higher, extending our impact in su***de prevention with our next Men's Meals & Mental Health Dinner at Adelaide Oval 18 June.

Still buzzing after a special day at the beautiful Kooyonga Golf Club, thanks to the incredible team at the Catapult Foundation for bringing together such a meaningful Fundraiser Golf Day in support of mental health research.

The day kicked off with sausage sizzles and some friendly (and competitive!) golf, setting the tone for a fantastic event. Guests then enjoyed a wonderful lunch hosted by MC Rebecca Morse, who kept the day running seamlessly.

We also heard from Izzi Batt-Doyle OLY a 2x Olympian and 2x Australian record holder, who spoke with humility about her remarkable achievements and journey in elite sport.

Wrapping up a success of the day, Tony Catt marked the occasion with a remarkable gesture, presenting a generous $50,000 cheque, to John Mannion, CEO of Breakthrough. These funds will go towards Breakthrough’s Catalyst Grant Round, supporting vital youth mental health research.

👉Events like these are only made possible thanks to the generosity and support of so many. A special thank you to James Thredgold Jeweller for sponsoring the incredible hole-in-one activation, as well as all the volunteers from Beyond Bank Australia, who generously donated their time to support all day.

A true show of community backing young people and investing in a brighter future.💜

🍇 If you are part of the wine or agriculture industry, you know how tough the job can be. Long hours. Financial pressure. Environmental uncertainty and often doing it all in isolation.
Yesterday, Breakthrough travelled to the McLaren Flat, in the stunning surrounds of Lloyd Brothers Wine & Olive Company to meet grape growers, suppliers and farmers to talk head-on about mental health, coping with distress and to bring the wine community - one of the great economic and social back bones to the state, together for a night of connection, and honest conversation.
John Mannion shared practical insights and tools for coping with mental illness, while James Thredgold , spoke movingly about the effects of loss on a family and his ongoing advocacy for improvement in the current State clinical mental health system.
Tom Burfitt, from Oliver & Press Winemakers shared his experience navigating mental health challenges, noting that family support really helped and that there is no one solution for everyone and to respect everyone's different journeys.
AFL captain Tom Jonas shared candidly about the pressures in leadership and reminded everyone in the room, that no one has to carry the load alone.

We thank our partners and for their generous support, and particularly Erin Leggat CEO of McLaren Vale Wine Region for inviting her members to attend this vital workshop.
👉 One event won’t solve everything, but it’s an important step and it reinforces a powerful truth: community and connection can play a vital role in recovery.

Last week, Breakthrough was proud to be part of the LeaderUp event at AFL Max founded by AFL great James Podsiadly, where 500 South Australian primary school students came together to explore bravery, leadership and mental health.
With Rory Sloane hosting the Q&A, students asked thoughtful questions about courage, community and caring for their wellbeing.
It was encouraging to see mental health front and centre. John Mannion spoke about recognising the signs of mental illness, checking in on friends, and simple tools like mindfulness and breathing.
He also highlighted the impact of Breakthrough-funded programs like Big Talks for Little People, that continue to help reduce bullying in schools.

Great to see young people learning how to support each other.🙌

If you see this man out on the road, stop and give him a hug and take a moment to listen to his cause. 💜

Lenny Deacon is cycling around Australia to raise $1 million for Breakthrough, supporting urgent mental health research. He is currently in WA.

Inspired by the loss of his best mate Dippa, Lenny has taken on the incredible challenge of cycling across the country. Along the way he’s stopping in country towns, pubs, and campsites to talk with people, share stories, and help break the stigma around mental health.

He says he’ll keep going for as long as it takes.💪

If you feel inspired like we do, please check out his page “Doin It For Dippa” or consider donating to his page. bit.ly/4pGIAIV

This we are celebrating the incredible women who do so much in their work to improve mental health 💜

An overwhelming majority of the Breakthrough team are women, including Brooke Dew, Sharn Elder, Jade Spicer, Magda Pearce, Susannah Norris, Leesa Scanlan and Ava Elder-Steele. These ladies bring passion, care and commitment to securing funding for vital mental health research, as well as organising community and wellbeing events that support so many people living silently with mental illness.

We’re also proud to acknowledge the many women who power Breakthrough more broadly, from those serving on our board and research committee, to the outstanding professors, researchers, mental health clinicians and volunteers helping drive progress across the sector.

Today we recognise all women, in their many roles as leaders, colleagues, parents, partners and friends, who show up every day to support the wellbeing of those around them.

Tackling Mental Health Head On

Our vision is to create a life free from mental illness.

Mental illness is going to be the biggest health challenge in our life time. It consumes lives, ruins lives and takes lives.

Mind and brain research is the only way to know what action needs to be taken to create a life free from mental illness.

Right now, one in five Australians has a mental health issue, and more people between 15-44 years are dying from su***de than any other cause.
