The insulin pump has come a long way since it’s invention in the 1960’s. The first insulin pumps were similar to the size of a microwave and were designed to be carried like a backpack! The early wearable insulin pumps came next in the late 1970’s (1), you can see one pictured below. They constantly released a small amount of diluted insulin, and if you turned the dial you could administer more at mealtimes.

Today, our insulin pumps are sleek, can be personalised and can calculate appropriate insulin adjustments. But we would not have such advanced technology without the developments from our earlier insulin pumps! We look forward to seeing how diabetes management will change with the technology of the future!
