Understanding how our brains and nervous system work helps to demystify and normalise experiences such as depression and anxiety, providing a scientific lens to our mental struggles. Neurobiology provides a language and explains thoughts, feelings and behaviour as the result of chemistry i.e. neural communication, and with this comes the possibility for change and adaptation. (Luke, 2019) Viewing the mind, brain, body and emotions as an integrated, interconnected, neurobiological system increases the scope for developing an effective evidence-based treatment strategy. (Afford, 2019) Beginning with the development of a “safe and trusting relationship”, as highlighted by Cozolino (2024), facilitates “growth and neural plasticity”. (p30)
