“Managing pressure injuries at the end of life isn’t straightforward. It’s a balancing act between clinical best practice and what really matters - comfort, dignity, and quality of life.”

In our latest blog, Dr Pauline Gillan, Charles Sturt University (CSU) and Professor Christina Parker, Queensland University of Technology (QUT), explore how pressure injuries are managed and where practice does not always align with guidelines 📋.

The review highlights the challenges clinicians face and the need for person-centred 🤝, evidence-based care 📚.

Chronic hiccups can have a significant impact in palliative care 🕊️

“Chronic and intractable hiccups are more than just a nuisance. They can become a relentless source of exhaustion, disrupting sleep, making it impossible to eat comfortably, and making conversation difficult”.

In this blog, Dr Adarsh Das and A/Prof Jayamangala Sampath Kondasinghe from the Palliative Care Service at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, explore the hidden impact of chronic hiccups and highlight the need for comfort-focused, person-centred care 💙

When someone is seriously ill, knowing where to turn for help can feel overwhelming. Whether you’re a patient, carer, or family member, finding the right services and support is an important first step.

CareSearch has recently reviewed and updated our Finding Services and Support pages, which bring together 𝗸𝗲𝘆 𝗽𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗔𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆. These pages highlight government-funded programs and major services that may be able to offer advice, care, or practical support.

While the listings can’t cover every local service, they provide a reliable starting point, and we’re always keen to hear about organisations or resources we may have missed.

🧠 “Dementia is a life-limiting condition affecting over 400,000 Australians. Although dementia care is delivered by professionals, most care is provided by family and friends.”

In this blog, Dr Claudia Meyer, Senior Research Fellow at the Bolton Clarke Research Institute, explores how respite and transition care can be reimagined through a person-centred, rights-based approach 🤝 that supports both people living with dementia and their carers. Drawing on realist research 🔍 with colleagues, the blog examines how respite and transition care programs work in real-world settings.

‘Across our network, many perspectives comingle, but when we asked our members what a ‘good death’ is, the picture became more nuanced.’ 🌱

In this blog, Shanna Provost for the Good Death Impact Network, explores the question of what a ‘good death’ really means, drawing on insights from members of the Good Death Impact Network who work across death, dying and grief. 💬 Is there a universal template for a good death? The reflections may challenge assumptions and invite readers to consider what matters most at the end of life. 🤍

What is the CareSearch Project?

We are a project working to support Australians with life-limiting illness and those who care for them to make informed decisions.

For over a decade, we have been providing patients and their carers and family, doctors, nurses, aged care staff, allied health professionals, and researchers access to trustworthy information and best available evidence.
