🧐Have you checked out our newly updated Digital Health section in the Evidence in Focus series?

Digital health is driving major change in health systems and in our community. It is transforming how we plan, organise, and participate in healthcare, including care for people at the end of life 💛. This section highlights how digital technology, from telehealth and apps to data systems, is reshaping care by empowering consumers, supporting clinicians, and improving health system planning.

“Humans have been caring for each other in death for thousands of years, long before there was ever a medical model, a notion of care homes or a funeral industry.” 🤍

In this blog, Rebecca Lyons, President of the Natural Death Advocacy Network and the Australian Home Funeral Alliance, explores how reconnecting with long-held traditions of care, service and community can gently reshape the way we think and talk about death. She highlights why more people are seeking personal, eco‑conscious, and values‑aligned choices at the end of life, and how simple acts of service, shared knowledge, and hands‑on participation can transform grief while strengthening death literacy across communities. 🌱

For our last 'thoughts from carers about Christmas' post, we share Colleen's advice to bereaved carers carrying an emotional load this Christmas.

“It’s important to remember them and talk about what it was like with him there. It was not easy but the day was all about being together and remembering Bill.”

Wishing a Merry Christmas to all the carers across Australia and safe 2026 🧡 🎄

🎄 During the festive season, social support matters now more than ever💛

For people receiving palliative care and their families, this time of year can bring both connection and added challenges. Social support makes a meaningful difference by reducing isolation, supporting carers, and improving quality of life. Some older adults living alone with palliative care even needs rely on non-kin carers, such as friends or neighbours 🤝.

Support from family, friends, healthcare professionals and community resources, whether emotional, informational 📘 or practical, can reduce stress and enhance the quality of life for patients, families and carers.

"We don’t often talk about this personal-professional interface – the feelings, beliefs, and meanings that arise when our life experiences meet the suffering of others. 💭💔Surprisingly, empirical research has largely overlooked this deeply human dimension of palliative care work."

In this blog, Dr Florence Chiew, Clinical Psychologist in Supportive & Palliative Care, explores how personal history, grief, and emotional responses shape the work of both volunteers and psychologists in palliative care. 💛 Drawing on two qualitative studies, she highlights how lived experience of loss can deepen empathy 🤝, strengthen presence, and influence professional identity.
