Your skin is an extremely clever organ, in fact it stems from the same cell embryologically as the brain and has similar mechanics in that it can release stress hormones. One we are all familiar with is cortisol; the skin will release cortisol in an attempt to reduce inflammation and communicates directly to the brain, known as the skin-brain axis. ⁠

So, how to know when your skin needs a change? Simply listen by observing. ⁠

As seasons change so too does the atmosphere we live in and our skin either adapts or communicates through a stress response that can appear as ultra-dry, sensitised, inflamed or irritated. When your skin shows you it is having a challenging time adapting to the seasonal changes it can be helpful to tweak your regime to reduce the skins stress response. This doesn’t mean a complete overhaul of your skin care but simple adjustments like incorporating oil-based cleansers, reducing exfoliation, switching up your retinoids and adding in oil balms, particularly if your skin becomes dehydrated and sensitised during seasonal changes. ⁠

Remember, it’s seasonal so it won’t last forever, however not addressing the skins needs during stressful times will only exacerbate the condition. ⁠
