Hillside Paediatrics

Hillside Paediatrics Hillside Paediatrics is an Adelaide based mobile Speech Pathology and Occupational Therapy service. We look forward to hearing from you!

We believe the best place to support children is within their natural environments, such as home, childcare or school. We aim to work alongside parents and caregivers to embed therapy into their everyday routines to maximise opportunities for language development throughout the day.

We would love to chat with you more about our services and the supports we can offer. All enquires placed through our website receive a complementary intake phone call where we discuss your goals and develop a plan for supports.

~ Parent/caregiver Coaching ~

As therapists, we know that parent/caregiver-coaching is one of the best, and evidence based ways we can support parents, caregivers and children in Early Intervention. This is why Hillside Paediatrics core values align with working alongside parents and caregivers to provide them with the information they need to support their child each and every day, not just in the one hour they see their speech pathologist.

So why do we think this is so important?

The time a child spends with a speech pathologist is incomparable to the time spent with those they have the strongest relationships with. It is within these relationships children will learn. The goal of therapy should not be for children to 'be in the average range' on a standardised assessment. Our goal should always be to help children reach their own, individual potential. This looks different for every child and family. Our purpose in using coaching is to empower parents and caregivers to be providing the 'therapy'. Therapy should not be a one size fits all approach and must be goal driven. If a child has achieved their goals, we must review the services we are providing. As children develop and change, our approach to therapy needs to develop alongside them.

Achieving family set goals and supporting independence and participation is what its all about!

If you feel like this approach is right for you, please get in touch.

~What can I do while I am waiting for support?~

If you are concerned about your child's speech and language development, and are planning to contact a Speech Pathologist, getting a hearing check is an important step. Waiting lists for services are at an all time high, so this is something you can do while you are waiting for an appointment.

As part of getting to know a child and their developmental needs, a Speech Pathologist should ask about a child's hearing and when their last assessment occurred. There are different types of hearing loss and these all have an impact on a child's development.

You can get a hearing check by speaking with your GP and getting a referral.

All we can say is THANK YOU to everyone who has supported us along the way! Here is to another year of setting goals and smashing them!

~Everyday Routine~ Washing Hands
There are so many opportunities for communication development in everyday activities. Many families can feel overwhelmed when seeking support for their child and find it challenging to 'add' therapy into their day.

By building communication opportunities into the routines a family already does, we can support meaningful connection between children and caregivers, which is the foundation to learning.

Routines based intervention is family centred, evidence based and functional.

~Early Intervention~

Our supports are provided within the home, education or community setting so we can support families to embed strategies within their every day routines. By doing this, we can support families to strengthen language opportunities throughout their day in natural, everyday interactions. ~ Turn questions into comments ~

Asking questions is how we as adults start and continue a conversation. Children in the early stages of communication development may find answering questions difficult. Instead of asking a question, try and turn it into a comment and then wait to see if your child responds. ‘Waiting’ and ‘commenting‘ are key strategies we coach parents to use with their children to support communication development.

~Be face to face~

When children are learning to communicate, they learn best from adults who are responsive to their thoughts, feelings and intentions. By being face to face with your child, you can better observe their interests and non-verbal communication, and appropriately respond. It is through this responsive relationship, that children learn.
