It’s November. For some of you, this will mean a day off for the Melbourne Cup. For some of you, it will mean a rest. For Joseph Wearing, it will mean a BIG rest. Joseph took on the grandest of Go the Distance Challenges - to ride 2000km during October to raise funds for Pain Revolution to provide scholarships for community-minded and community-committed health professionals to become Local Pain Educators. Joseph made his goal on the very last day of October. An outstanding achievement. To all of you who went the distance and raised some money for Pain Revolution, thank you. Thank you indeed.

Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is an evidence-based, user-friendly program that brings the principles of mindfulness meditation into everyday life by teaching specific skills and practices to help break cycles of anxiety, stress, unhappiness and exhaustion.

Undertaking this in-depth training to develop a steady mindfulness practice will offer you a precious capacity for the rest of your life. We take a genuine, personal approach and our dedicated teachers will go the extra mile to help you engage with each other and your practice in ways that are immediately satisfying and helpful. You will learn a range of mindfulness practices to cultivate an observant, accepting and compassionate stance towards your own internal experiences and how to apply this in a practical way to immediate life challenges. https://www.openground.com.au/mindfulness-based-stress-reduction-mbsr/from-isolation-to-connection/

Getting started with exercise can be really tricky with chronic pain, especially if your experience is that it always seems to make things worse. There is a bit of a map to help with getting started (and continuing), and in the longer term, it makes life a lot better.

Feeling daunted by the prospect of movement? Experts say the secret is to 'go for it, but gently'.

Many of my patients immediately relate to the concept of fear. They feel scared of their pain, and they're eager to explore that dynamic. I've had other patients you didn't identify with the word "fear." Not because they didn't have fear, but because they called it something else.

When I discuss emotions with my patients, I ask a simple questions: "Does this feeling make your brain feel more danger or less danger?" If the answer is "more danger," then it's a form of fear. So when I talk about fear of the pain, I'm including frustration, despair, stress, anguish, anxiety, annoyance, dismay, and anything else that puts you on high alert.

"Mindfulness…being mindful, meditating, you know it’s good for you, but it just never feels like there’s enough time."

Mindfulness … being mindful, meditating, you know it’s good for you, but it just never feels like there’s enough time. Using meditation to create mindfulness is an ancient practice, and the science backing it has been piling in for years now. But how can we be motivated to make meditation part...

Term 4 MBSR starts on October 24. This term will be at the beautiful Fullarton Park Centre, Monday mornings 930-12.

Many people think they can’t meditate but here is one of the many benefits of being in a group-you discover that we are all the same in our doubts (and constant mind chatter). It’s deeply reassuring for us to know we are not alone. To know that you are not doing anything wrong, that’s just what minds do. But there is a way to get underneath it and find a deeper stillness and wisdom-it’s a training like anything else and this programme is a deep dive.

It also offers the opportunity to learn about stress and understand why we think and feel the way we do when we are under the pump. You can learn to be less reactive and respond skilfully rather than being on autopilot and engage in behaviours that you know aren’t moving you in the right direction.
And quite possibly, one of the most important elements of this programme (as opposed to just using an app or going it alone) is to really meaningfully connect with others, feel into a sense of belonging and the opportunity to be a bit less alone with whatever it is we are grappling with.

I made a bold move this year and have gone back to UniSA full time to pursue a Masters by Research. It has been the most satisfying and humbling experience to go back to being a complete novice. I have enjoyed the learning process and relish this unique opportunity to continue to stretch and grow my learning. I am very lucky to be surrounded by the best minds in the world of pain (the Body in Mind group, Persistent Pain, IIMPACT). My research centres on the therapeutic value of groups within persistent pain programmes. This has meant that my clincal work has reduced quite dramatically (and COVID has added to the complexity of running in person groups) but I'm going to run an MBSR group in term 4 this year.

Term 4 MBSR starts on October 24. This term will be at the beautiful Fullarton Park Centre, Monday mornings 930-12.

Mindfulness Meditation can help you to relax quickly and effectively, improve concentration, cope with pain and cultivate a deep sense of well-being and happiness.
In a health context, this involves gaining a greater understanding (through direct experience) of your own nature and habitual thoughts, the interplay between your mind and body which can lead to profound changes.
