🌟 A Celebration of Inclusion and Recognition at Government House 🌟

On 2nd December 2025, Cara had the privilege of hosting a reception at Government House to mark International Day of People with Disability - Australia. This year’s theme, “Fostering disability inclusive societies for advancing social progress”, echoed throughout the event, reinforcing our shared commitment to meaningful inclusion.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to our patrons, Her Excellency the Honourable Frances Adamson AC Governor of South Australia and Mr Bunten, for welcoming us and sharing in this celebration. Our clients were also delighted to utilise the new accessible entry to Government House, a significant improvement that reflects the commitment to inclusion and accessibility for all.

The highlight of the day? Her Excellency personally presented Certificates of Appreciation to our clients, a gesture that brought immense pride and joy to everyone present.

Adding to the significance of the day, Minister for Human Services Nat Cook MP made a special appearance, sharing her support.

This event was a powerful reminder of the importance of inclusion, dignity, and recognition. Together, we continue to champion opportunities for all. 💜

🌟 History of Cara Series: Exploring Our Rich History, Woodford 🌟

Woodford holds a special place in Cara’s history. 🏠
Located at 98 Woodville Road, Woodville, Woodford was the original residential home for children with disability and later became Cara’s former head office.

Purchased in 1951 for £7,500, the funds came from a major appeal inspired by the story of a 12-year-old girl who watched her siblings play from her wheelchair. When she leaned forward to pick up her doll, her iron leg braces were revealed, a moment that sparked community action and generosity.
On November 28, 1951, the Adelaide press announced Woodford with the headline: “School for Spastic Children.”

In 1970, Woodford was rebuilt as a modern, accessible building with therapy rooms, a training centre, and even a rehabilitative swimming pool. It became a hub for Cara, SCOSA, and other organisations until 2018, when Cara relocated to Hindmarsh.

Today, at our Home of Possible, a meeting room named Woodford honours this important chapter in our history. 🌹

🌟 History of Cara Series: Exploring Our Rich History, Edna Redman 🌟

For more than 40 years, Edna Redman OAM was an active and tireless supporter of the Spastic Centres of South Australia.
She served as a Patron, a Board Member, and a member of the Woodville Women’s Auxiliary, helping to shape services for people with disability.

💬 Edna once said:
"The mothers of the spastic children had a common bond in that they wanted to do something for their children, and they started the Centre with the idea, eventually, of a permanent home for their children."

Her dedication was recognised with the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM).
Edna sadly passed away in 2015, but her spirit lives on within Cara and through her family. In 2018, her family’s winery, Redman Wines, released their first rosé, Edna’s Rosé, as a heartfelt tribute to her life and legacy.

🏢 At Cara’s head office, a meeting room named in her honour ensures her contribution will never be forgotten.
Thank you, Edna, for helping lay the foundation for Cara’s purpose: supporting people with disability to live the life they choose, with joy, purpose, and belonging.
