I've just received notification that the Government has decided to drop Naturopathy from Private Health coverage. The other modalities included in the letter are:
Alexander Technique, Aromatherapy, Bowen, Buteyko, Feldenkrais, Western Herbalism, Homeopathy, Iridology Kinesiology, Pilates, Reflexology, Rolfing, Shiatsu, Tai Chi, and Yoga.
I mean no disrespect to any of these other modalities in this post. But I have done most of these as PART OF MY NATUROPATHIC studies.
As well as Medical Sciences (listed further down).
My problem is HOW CAN 'NATUROPATHY' BE LUMPED IN WITH ALL OF THESE. It is a Bachelor Degree these days.
4 Years, studying practically all of the above with a whole lot more.
What I studied to become a Naturopath: (1991 - 1994)
I needed prerequisites in:
Biology, chemistry, physics, algebra, psychology, social sciences, and humanities. I was required to do a test to be evaluated whether bridging subjects needed to be done.
(I didn't need to).
The Curriculum
Licensed Naturopaths are educated in all the same biomedical sciences as an MD.
NDs study holistic and nontoxic approaches to THERAPY with a strong emphasis on disease PREVENTION and optimizing wellness.
Years 1-2
In both MD and ND schools, there is a focus on biomedical science, clinical sciences, and diagnostics, including:
My Curriculum Included:
Anatomy and Physiology (2 Years)
Diagnosis and Pathology (2 Years)
Human Biology
Microbiology
Health Science / Chemistry
Pathophysiology
Sociology
Psychology
Pharmacology and Therapeutics
Counselling and Health Education
General Communications
In Naturopathic College, you are then taken on a different journey of subjects such as:
Naturopathic Science
Nutrition (2 years)
Western Herbal Medicine (2 years)
Homoeopathy (2 years)
Iridology
Remedial and Sports Massage
Oriental Therapy
Traditional Chinese Medicine
Acupuncture (not all colleges offer this).
Kinesiology / Neuro-Muscular Technique
Aromatherapy
Reflexology
Student Clinic
St Johns Senior First Aid
Clinical Work Experience (247 hours).
Business Principles
Computing
Quality Control
MY POINT IS:
Naturopaths do a lot of study to gain that Diploma / Degree and deserve to be acknowledged as part of the Health Practitioner world, just as are Doctors MD, Chiropractors, Physiotherapists etc. We all have something to offer in the world of Health.
As you can see from my list of modalities studied I have indeed studied and gained credit for most of the modalities that have been dropped from Health Insurance.
I wonder if the powers that are.........
actually know what a Naturopath is.
Oh and as a last note, practically all of my patients have already been to the Doctor, and the Specialist, before they turn to me. And I have had A LOT OF SUCCESS with them.
Isn't that the goal.
I was taught that if I am not able to help that person, to refer them on to someone who can. I do that.
I also swore to the Hippocratic Oath, to do no harm.....
I only want to be recognized for the Practitioner that I am, no more.
I am not a Medical Doctor. Although I have studied a lot of the same.
I am not a Physiotherapist, although I have studied a lot of the same.
I am not a Chiropractor, although I have studied a lot of the same.
We have all studied a lot of the same, and then gone on to OUR SPECIALIZED FIELDS.
WE SHOULD BE WORKING TOGETHER, FOR THE SAKE OF THE PATIENT.
If you care, give voice to your Health Funds.
I just needed to say my piece, Thank you for reading.
Yours in Health and Happiness
