Meet Rose-Ann, 87 years young and still passionate about cooking! 👩‍🍳

Despite health challenges, Rose-Ann is determined to keep creating her own meals. Every fortnight, she cooks with Holly, an ECH Home Service Team Member, preparing hearty favourites like shepherd's pie and sausage rolls to freeze for the week ahead.

"Even if I'm not feeling 100%, I make that effort, and I find that I enjoy it," Rose-Ann says. "You've got to have someone you can work with and who likes to cook as well."

💡Rose-Ann's top cooking tips:
✓ Keep trying, even when tired—you'll be pleased you did
✓ Cook with someone who loves it
✓ Freeze meals for later (small freezer = game changer!)
✓ Use practical tools like slow cookers and peelers
✓ Don't worry about perfection—just enjoy the process
✓ Experiment with herbs and spices for flavour

"Food for older people can be a bit bland," Rose-Ann says. "So Holly and I make things that taste good. Then we sit and enjoy a sample together!"

Cooking together isn't just about the food—it's about connection, independence and keeping skills alive.

Bring the garden inside! 🌿✨

You don't need a backyard to enjoy fresh herbs. A sunny windowsill and a few pots are all it takes to grow basil, parsley, mint and more right in your kitchen.
Why countertop gardening?
🌱 Fresh flavour whenever you need it
💚 Most nutritious immediately after picking
🏡 Perfect for smaller spaces
🪴 Adds greenery and lovely fragrance
Even repurposed containers like yoghurt pots or tins can work—just add drainage holes!

Care tips:
• Rotate pots for even light
• Take them outdoors occasionally for direct sun
• Feed with liquid tonic fortnightly
• Trim regularly to keep plants bushy

Bonus idea: Try microgreens for a healthy crunch in salads—ready in just 2 weeks!

Don't let the summer heat keep you from moving! 🌞

Staying active in warmer weather just takes a little planning:
✓ Exercise when it's cooler—early morning or evening
✓ Keep water with you and sip often
✓ Wear a hat, light clothes and sunscreen
✓ Take it slow and rest when you need to

Love the water? Swimming is perfect for summer—low-impact, refreshing, and many pools offer concession rates.
Too hot outside? Indoor stretching, light weights or an ECH wellness class will keep you moving comfortably.

Always listen to your body. If you feel dizzy, tired or short of breath, it's time to rest.

Need personalised support? Our ECH Exercise Physiologists and wellness programs are here to help.

"It got so bad I ended up at the hospital."

That's how Margaret describes her foot problems before finding ECH Podiatry. Chronic infections, painful pressure points and difficulty walking made everyday life a struggle.
Now, with regular visits to ECH podiatrist Hannah through the Commonwealth Home Support Program, everything has changed.

"She keeps my feet in good condition and tells me exactly what I need to do at home. We work together," Margaret says. "We've managed to keep everything under control."

Why foot care matters as we age:
As we get older, changes in circulation, reduced sensation and loss of protective padding can lead to foot problems. Early detection and regular care help prevent serious complications.

If something doesn't look or feel right—redness, swelling, numbness, pain—don't wait.

📌ECH Podiatry can help with:
✓ Nail care, corns and calluses
✓ Diabetes-related foot care
✓ Footwear advice
✓ Managing painful foot conditions

No referral needed. Appointments available at our Wellness Centres, or at home through Support at Home options.
