“I don’t feel like myself anymore.”
Depression is more than sadness, it can affect every part of a person’s life, from how they think to how they move through the day.
Things to look for:
• Loss of interest in things once enjoyed
• Persistent low mood
• Feeling hopeless or helpless
• Changes in appetite or weight
• Sleeping too much or too little
• Withdrawal from others
• Fatigue or low energy
• Thoughts of self-harm or su***de
Check in with those around you. Sometimes the strongest people are the ones silently struggling.

Every person who walks through our doors is met by a team of professionals who genuinely care. We’re spotlighting the people who make Ramsay Clinics feel safe, welcoming and supportive.
Meet Mel - one of our Social Workers:

How do you support people with their mental health and social needs?
I provide person-centered support by helping individuals identify their goals, strengths, and challenges. This includes connecting them with appropriate mental health services, advocating for their needs, and offering emotional support. I also assist with practical aspects such as housing, financial stability, and community engagement to promote overall wellbeing.

What kinds of barriers do you help people navigate?
I help people navigate a range of barriers including:
• Systemic challenges like accessing NDIS, Centrelink, or housing services.
• Communication barriers, especially for those with cognitive or language difficulties.
• Stigma and discrimination, which can impact access to care and community inclusion.
• Service gaps, where needed supports are unavailable or underfunded.

What’s one community resource or support that more people should know about?
Community Centres SA.
Community Centres SA is a network of over 150 neighbourhood and community centres across South Australia. These centres offer inclusive, low-barrier access to services that support wellbeing, connection, and empowerment. Many people are unaware of the breadth of support available, which includes:
• Free or low-cost programs: Mental health support, financial counselling, parenting groups, and skill-building workshops.
• Social inclusion activities: Community lunches, art groups, and multicultural events.
• Practical assistance: Help with forms, referrals, and navigating services like NDIS or Centrelink.
These centres are invaluable for:
• Building community resilience
• Reducing isolation
• Providing early intervention before issues escalate
They’re especially helpful for clients who may not meet eligibility for more formal services but still need support.

“That happened years ago, I should be over it by now.”
PTSD doesn’t follow a timeline, and it can affect anyone who’s experienced trauma - from car accidents to violence, natural disasters, or abuse.
Here are some signs to look out for:
• Flashbacks or intrusive memories
• Avoidance of reminders (places, people, situations)
• Nightmares or disturbed sleep
• Feeling constantly on edge or jumpy
• Irritability or angry outbursts
• Emotional numbness
If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Help is available, and healing is possible.

At Ramsay Mental Health, our people are at the heart of everything we do.
Get to know the faces behind the care - what inspires them, what they love about their work, and how they’re making a difference in the lives of our patients.
Meet Katie, one of our amazing Ward Clerks at Ramsay Clinic Adelaide:

What inspired you to work in mental health?
Having known people close to me who struggle/d with mental health. I lost a friend at 21 and when I look back I realise I knew absolutely nothing about mental health and how the struggles with it can affect people. I like to be a part of making it something people feel comfortable talking about, because it shouldn’t be something we should be ashamed of.

What’s one thing you wish more people knew about your role?
It’s hard work and requires me to be switched on every single day! It’s a complex role with lots of behind the scenes tasks that people don’t even know are happening. It requires you to look at issues from a range of different perspectives and make a solution and works best for all.

What do you love most about your job?
The people I work with. We are a small family, it is a very welcoming and extremely supportive environment.

“I can stop whenever I want.”
Addiction isn’t a lack of willpower, it’s a complex condition that changes the brain, and it can affect anyone.
Warning signs may include:
• Using substances to cope with stress or emotions
• Needing more to feel the same effect
• Hiding use from others
• Neglecting responsibilities
• Changes in mood, sleep, or physical appearance
• Trouble stopping even when wanting to
Recovery is possible, and help is within reach.

Feeling off but not sure who to turn to?

Here’s a quick guide:
🔹 GP – for physical symptoms or assessment and referral for mental health support
🔹 Psychologist – for talking therapies, stress, anxiety or life challenges
🔹 Mental Health Clinic – for more complex needs or when outpatient support isn’t enough

You don’t need to figure it all out alone.
